Description

You will be the primary day-to-day legal partner to research leaders and technical teams across advanced research and development. The role centers on privacy and regulatory compliance for large-scale research data flows supporting contextualized AI and robotics, plus research partnership agreements and intellectual property counseling for novel hardware and software. You will work with evolving legal frameworks, often with limited precedent, and coordinate across multiple legal and compliance functions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary legal partner to one or more research pillars; advise on legal and regulatory risk across a broad set of technologies
  • Advise on privacy and regulatory compliance for large-scale research data collection programs, including data flows supporting all-day contextualized AI and robotics
  • Structure, negotiate, and close research and development agreements with commercial and academic partners (collaboration, data, technology arrangements)
  • Provide intellectual property counseling for early-stage research across novel hardware and software technologies
  • Advise on prototype and research hardware requirements, including product safety, regulatory approvals, and global trade and export compliance
  • Align research programs with downstream product and regulatory requirements and position research outputs for handoff to the product organization
  • Identify recurring and emerging legal issues early across research pillars and develop scalable guidance, frameworks, and processes
  • Coordinate across Legal, Privacy, Public Policy, Partnerships, Regulatory, and Compliance; manage outside counsel when specialist support is needed
  • Apply AI tools to drive efficiency in legal support of research initiatives

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution
  • Active bar license in good standing in at least one U.S. state (or equivalent foreign bar license) with ability to promptly obtain permission to practice law for Meta in required jurisdictions
  • 8+ years of legal experience as a practicing attorney (law firm, in-house, or government)
  • Experience providing privacy and data protection counseling, including global privacy laws and regulatory frameworks
  • Experience advising on legal and regulatory issues for new and emerging technologies where legal frameworks are unsettled
  • Experience drafting and negotiating technology transactions (research collaboration, data, licensing, joint development agreements)
  • Experience managing legal risk across multiple jurisdictions
  • Experience advising research or engineering stakeholders directly
  • Strong legal writing, client counseling, communication, and business judgment; demonstrated delivery on large-scale cross-functional projects in a fast-paced environment

Benefits

  • Compensation range: $202,000/year to $274,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
