Description

Provide strategic and day-to-day leadership for the Operations Engineering function supporting offshore drilling operations. Manage Operations Engineers, set technical and operational priorities, and partner with Operations, HSE, Maintenance, Supply Chain, clients, and other engineering disciplines to deliver safe, reliable, compliant, and cost-effective rig performance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop Operations Engineers; set expectations, assign work, provide feedback, and support succession planning
  • Prioritize and allocate engineering resources across rigs and projects based on operational risk, client commitments, business value, and workforce capacity
  • Serve as senior engineering liaison with operator and company leadership to translate operational requirements into technical plans and accountabilities
  • Provide technical leadership and escalation support to rig superintendents, Operations Engineers, and rig teams for complex equipment, structural, maintenance, and operational issues
  • Define department and project objectives; approve operating plans, engineering deliverables, manpower requirements, schedules, budgets, and risk controls
  • Own the quality and timeliness of customer performance reviews; ensure accurate data, identify improvement opportunities, and track commitments through closure
  • Review drilling performance, safety trends, downtime, reliability, and operational risks; direct root-cause analysis and approve corrective actions and procedural changes
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards, operating procedures, technical assurance practices, and management-of-change discipline
  • Oversee planning and follow-through for platform structural inspections, maintenance programs, and critical equipment certifications; ensure findings are assigned and closed in time
  • Monitor rig and equipment condition, preventive maintenance performance, and emerging technical risks; escalate material issues and ensure mitigation plans are implemented
  • Review and communicate reports for senior management and customers on drilling progress, operational risks, engineering workload, equipment requirements, budget performance, and improvement initiatives
  • Build effective cross-functional relationships to remove barriers and deliver integrated solutions

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • 10 years’ experience supporting drilling or offshore operations, including experience leading engineers/technical professionals and managing multiple concurrent priorities
  • Strong working knowledge of American Petroleum Institute specifications and recommended practices for drilling rigs, structures, and critical equipment
  • Strong working knowledge of Federal Outer Continental Shelf regulatory requirements, including Title 30 CFR Part 250 and SEMS
  • Comprehensive knowledge of drilling operations, rig systems, equipment reliability, structural integrity, inspection programs, and maintenance practices (including legacy/SCR rig systems)
  • Ability to lead across multiple engineering disciplines and operational groups; make risk-based decisions and drive action without direct authority
  • Demonstrated safety leadership, including the judgment to stop or redirect work when risk is not adequately controlled
  • People-leadership capability (coaching, performance management, conflict resolution, talent development, succession planning)
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation, and stakeholder-management skills
  • Ability to review and interpret engineering drawings, calculations, inspection reports, and technical specifications
  • Strong proficiency with PC-based business and analytical applications, including Excel and Word (experience with performance/maintenance/business-intelligence systems preferred)
