Hardware Design & PCB Layout Engineer (Advanced Power Electronics)

Senior

85,000 - 140,000 USD/yr

Warren, MI

Quick Facts

  • Role: Hardware Design & PCB Layout Engineer (Advanced Power Electronics)

  • Focus: Electric-vehicle inverter and power electronics hardware; high-frequency, high-voltage PCB design; SI/PI and EMC

  • Work style: Hybrid (reports to Warren, MI at least 3 times/week)

Description

Lead the development of next-generation inverter and power electronics hardware solutions for electric vehicle applications. Use engineering tools, processes, and program management disciplines to deliver designs that meet cost, performance, efficiency, quality, and timing targets. Responsibilities include schematic and PCB design, electromagnetic analysis, worst-case electrical verification, and automotive EMC/EMI-focused layout.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Q3D (or equivalent 2D/3D) electromagnetic field-solver analysis for PCB and magnetics parasitics

  • Design high-frequency transformers, inductors, planar and PCB-embedded magnetics

  • Conduct hands-on signal integrity (SI), power integrity (PI), and worst-case circuit analysis (WCA) including component tolerances and environmental variation

  • Apply high-voltage PCB practices: creepage, clearance, insulation coordination, and partial-discharge considerations

  • Layout fast-switching SiC or IGBT power stages, optimizing gate-loop design and controlling dv/dt, di/dt, and parasitic inductance

  • Develop automotive EMI/EMC design for high-power converters (filtering, grounding, shielding, CISPR 25 requirements)

  • Coordinate PCB design with power modules, busbars, gate drivers, thermal interfaces, and mechanical packaging

  • Lead advanced technology development: design, analysis, simulation, validation, and testing

  • Create and support digital and analog hardware designs (schematic development, PCB layout, simulation, and documentation)

  • Develop and optimize PCB layouts for functional, manufacturability, signal integrity, power integrity, EMC, thermal, and mechanical requirements

  • Perform component placement, trace routing, stack-up definition, and layout optimization for high-density, high-speed, mixed-signal designs

  • Create, review, and verify PCB layouts using DRC, DFM, and DFA methodologies

  • Use modeling, simulation, systems analysis, and optimization to ensure system-level and interface requirements are met

  • Collaborate with hardware designers, systems engineers, ECAD, PCBA, packaging, manufacturing teams, and suppliers

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in hardware design, PCB layout, or power electronics development

  • Experience creating digital and analog hardware interfaces (schematic capture, PCB layout, simulation, engineering documentation)

  • Hands-on experience with PCB design and analysis tools (Mentor Graphics/Xpedition, Altium, or equivalent ECAD platforms)

  • Experience conducting PCB layout verification (DRC, DFM, DFA reviews)

  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills

  • Ability to work on a hybrid schedule reporting to Warren, MI at least 3 times per week

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in PCB layout, hardware design, or power electronics development

  • EV propulsion/inverters/converters/battery systems or automotive ECU experience

  • Knowledge of high-speed communication interfaces (Ethernet, CAN, LIN)

  • High-density, high-speed, RF, or mixed-signal PCB layout experience

  • Familiarity with automotive development processes, functional safety, and product development lifecycle requirements

  • Experience supporting manufacturing launches and supplier development for production-ready PCBs

  • Track record driving cost reduction, performance optimization, and technology innovation

  • Experience with HV power electronics, connectivity, or complex automotive electronic systems
