- Frequent travel to project sites (~30%)
Description
The Senior Electrical Engineer will lead electrical engineering for temporary power generation facilities and advanced energy systems, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient electrical power solutions. The role spans end-to-end design—from conceptual design through startup and commissioning—covering medium/low-voltage distribution, BESS integration, substations, DC control systems, and protection/control documentation. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and mentor engineers while meeting applicable electrical and utility standards.
Responsibilities
- Lead electrical engineering and design of temporary power generation facilities from concept through startup and commissioning
- Design medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution (generators, switchgear, transformers, motor control centers, breakers, relaying, protective devices)
- Design and integrate BESS (battery technologies, PCS, EMS, grid-support applications)
- Develop substation designs (transformer selection, bus arrangements, protection schemes, grounding systems, utility interconnections)
- Design DC control systems, station batteries, battery chargers, relay panels, annunciation systems, SCADA interfaces, and auxiliary power systems
- Create one-line/three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, protection and control schematics, cable schedules, and construction packages
- Run electrical calculations: load flow, short-circuit studies, protective relay coordination, arc flash analysis, grounding studies, voltage drop calculations, equipment sizing
- Support generator synchronization and paralleling for temporary and permanent installations
- Develop automatic transfer schemes and control philosophies for critical power applications
- Ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA, IEEE, NESC, UL, ANSI, and applicable utility standards
- Coordinate with mechanical engineering to integrate gas systems, cooling, fuel systems, and auxiliary equipment
- Provide engineering leadership through design reviews, procurement support, construction support, commissioning, and troubleshooting
- Mentor junior engineers and guide engineering/operations teams
- Coordinate with project managers, contractors, vendors, utilities, and customers to deliver safely, on schedule, and within budget
- Evaluate emerging technologies in energy storage, distributed generation, microgrids, and renewable integration
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
- At least 10 years of electrical engineering experience in power generation, utility, industrial, or energy infrastructure projects
- Extensive knowledge of medium- and low-voltage power systems
- Experience designing BESS and associated control systems
- Experience with substation design, protection and control systems, and utility interconnections
- Strong understanding of DC control systems, station batteries, battery chargers, relay logic, and protection circuits
- Experience with generator controls, synchronization systems, automatic transfer switches, and switchgear
- Working knowledge of SCADA, PLCs, HMI platforms, and industrial communication protocols
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership skills managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and mentoring junior engineers
- Self-motivated with strong organizational and project management skills
