Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Identity International)

Senior • Remote

25,667 - 35,667 PLN/yr

Warsaw, MZ, Poland

Affirm’s Identity team is mission-critical to the customer checkout experience. When a customer chooses Affirm, one of the first steps is an identity check, and the ability to make the right decision directly impacts conversion, revenue, fraud exposure, and regulatory compliance.

The team owns Identity for all markets outside North America, playing a key role in international expansion. It is responsible for KYC, user lifecycle management, and identity decisioning across multiple regulatory environments. This work involves shaping how the core Identity platform adapts to new market dynamics, customer expectations, and compliance requirements.

The team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can turn ambiguous business and customer problems into reliable, well-designed technical solutions. In this role, you will help shape quarterly technical direction, translate team goals into concrete projects, and identify cross-cutting risks, tradeoffs, and opportunities. You should be comfortable designing across system boundaries, driving collaboration with partner teams, and advocating for technical investments that improve long-term execution.

The role requires ownership beyond shipping code: raising code quality and review standards, making performance, availability, and scale tradeoffs explicit, and improving the operational health of owned systems. You will help reduce toil, create useful playbooks, mentor engineers, support new hires and interns, and contribute to high-signal hiring. This is a high-visibility, high-impact role working on foundational systems that enable global growth.

Quick Facts

  • Team of six engineers based across Spain and Poland
  • Work on KYC, user lifecycle management, and identity decisioning for markets outside North America
  • Remote-first role; most roles can be performed from anywhere within Poland

What You'll Do

  • Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team, lead engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems, and ensure support throughout delivery.
  • Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics throughout the product development lifecycle, including ideation, articulating technical constraints, and making decisions that consider risks and trade-offs.
  • Proactively identify project, process, technology, or business issues; advocate for them and lead their resolution.
  • Support the operations and availability of team artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting on-call and operational efforts.
  • Foster quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards, and advocate for them through writing and tech talks.
  • Develop team talent by providing feedback and guidance and leading by example.

What We Look For

  • 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages such as Python or Kotlin.
  • Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience defining a technical plan for delivering a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple, and extensible design.
  • Ability to write high-quality code that is easily understood and used by others.
  • Proficiency making significant changes in a large codebase, supported by tools and practices that enable safe delivery.
  • Ownership of professional growth and proactive solicitation of feedback from the team, manager, and stakeholders.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
