Description

Lead the engineering team responsible for the backend retrieval and ranking infrastructure behind recommendations. Own reliable, low-latency production systems, observability, and incident response, and drive a product-intuitive technical strategy in partnership with ML and Data Science.

Responsibilities

• Build, coach, and retain a high-performing backend team focused on recommender systems

• Own production recommendation systems, including observability and incident response

• Catch regressions in latency, quality, or fairness before users notice

• Create and execute a technical strategy grounded in product intuition and user empathy

• Partner with Machine Learning to define roadmaps and balance user-facing improvements with infrastructure, reliability, and experimentation

• Co-own experimentation processes, tools, and best practices with Data Science

Requirements

• 3+ years managing engineers (hiring, performance management, career development, delivery)

• Experience leading or building production recommender systems at scale

• Hands-on depth in high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems serving millions of users

• Expertise in Go, Java/JVM, or a similar backend language; Postgres; AWS/GCP; Kubernetes
