  • Work model: In-person/hybrid (commute to Scottsdale, Arizona)

Description

Lead the design and development of secure, scalable cloud-native digital solutions that simplify the transfer experience for learners, from transcript ingestion and equivalency evaluation to articulation, review, and learner-facing reporting. Build end-to-end workflows using artificial intelligence, automation, and modern cloud technologies to reduce friction and improve transparency. Provide technical direction, guide architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and advance modern engineering practices, including responsible use of AI-assisted development and agentic workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and support secure, scalable digital services that improve transfer learner experience and outcomes
  • Provide technical leadership across backend services, integration layers, asynchronous processing systems, and learner/administrator-facing web applications
  • Architect end-to-end transfer workflows: document ingestion and storage, AI-assisted extraction, queued processing, equivalency evaluation, articulation-system integration, human review, reporting, and document generation
  • Own and evolve HTTP and event-driven contracts between services and client applications (API versioning, payload design, compatibility)
  • Design durable integrations with university platforms and third-party services, including availability, data consistency, retries, idempotency, auditability, and failure modes
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, architects, and institutional stakeholders; lead technical planning and architectural discussions
  • Establish engineering practices for architecture, code quality, test-driven development, documentation, observability, security, accessibility, and production support; ensure FERPA and data-governance compliance
  • Maintain technical documentation (domain glossaries, ADRs, API contracts, operational runbooks, repository guidance)
  • Mentor engineers and support delivery in a collaborative, inclusive, agile environment
  • Define responsible approaches for AI-powered and multimodal applications and evaluate emerging technologies
  • Assume or coordinate additional duties as assigned

Benefits

  • Salary: $120,000–$130,000 per year (DOE)

  • Tuition reduction (eligible ASU employees, their dependents, and spouse)
  • Discounts

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 7 years of experience OR equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs, microservices, and web applications with JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, HTTP, JSON
  • Modern Node.js backend framework experience (NestJS preferred), including dependency injection and modular architecture
  • Strong front-end development experience with Vue 3 (or comparable SPA framework)
  • Relational databases and data persistence tooling experience (PostgreSQL and TypeORM preferred)
  • AWS experience building secure, resilient cloud applications (S3, SQS, Textract, ECR, ECS, CloudFront, IAM)
  • Asynchronous and event-driven systems design experience (queues, workers, long-running jobs, retries, idempotency)
  • Application security and identity/authentication/authorization knowledge (IAM, JWT, OAuth, API keys)
  • CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code experience (GitHub Actions, Terraform, Docker, container registries, OIDC-based cloud authentication)
  • Testing discipline grounded in TDD with Jest, Supertest, and Vitest
  • AI-assisted development and agentic engineering experience
  • Accessibility knowledge (WCAG 2.1 AA) and Agile/Scrum experience (Jira or comparable)
