Description

The PM&R Specialist evaluates and treats patients with physical and/or cognitive impairments and disabilities resulting from musculoskeletal, neurological, or other medical conditions. The role focuses on improving patients’ physical, psychological, social, and vocational function using therapeutic exercise, medications, injections, electrodiagnosis, prostheses, orthoses, and assistive equipment. Care includes nonsurgical management of a wide range of conditions to maximize function and quality of life.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and treat patients with physical and/or cognitive impairments and disabilities

• Manage pain and spasticity using therapeutic exercise, medications, and injections

• Perform electrodiagnosis

• Recommend and coordinate prostheses (artificial limbs), orthoses (braces), and equipment that support daily activities

• Treat conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons

• Use time-tested and cutting-edge treatments to maximize function and quality of life

• Provide nonsurgical management for orthopedic injuries, spine-related pain and dysfunction, occupational injuries, and overuse syndromes

• Manage neurogenic bowel/bladder, pressure sores, spasticity, and chronic pain

Requirements

• Medical degree in the state of New York

• Four additional years of postdoctoral training in a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency

• Must have a medical license

• Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity

• Good organizational ability

• Ability to work well alone and within a team

• Good interpersonal skills
