Description

Lead and scale core web-scraping “Actors” that power AI use cases, especially a Website Content Crawler that converts websites into clean text, Markdown, and structured data for AI models, vector databases, and RAG pipelines. Work hands-on in Node.js/TypeScript, using AI as part of your development workflow and building AI-powered tools to speed up the team. As you grow, you’ll take ownership of planning, technical decisions, and the team roadmap while continuing to code.

Responsibilities

• Build and scale Website Content Crawler and other core Actors for deep crawling under real-world load

• Strip out noise and output clean text, Markdown, and structured data

• Contribute to Crawlee (Apify’s open-source web scraping library)

• Help with cross-team/platform engineering when needed

• Write clean, readable code; improve quality through reviews and refactoring

• Reverse-engineer website behavior and design developer-friendly APIs

• Use and build AI-assisted tooling to speed up extraction and development

• Lead the Universe team in a hands-on manner: plan work, unblock others, and guide architecture

Requirements

• Experience leading a team or larger projects (formal or informal) and willingness to own outcomes

• Strong JavaScript and TypeScript (Node.js) skills and understanding of web technologies

• At least 2 years of professional or open-source experience on a non-trivial team-built project

• High standards for code quality, readability, and frequent refactoring

• Ability to use AI tools effectively, including knowing where they help and where they don’t

• Problem-solving mindset and continuous learning drive (web scraping and leadership)

• Systems thinking: architecture design, trade-off evaluation, and coherent product-level thinking

• Clear English communication (writing and speaking)
