Design Release Engineer (DRE) – Overhead Systems

Key Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Lead end-to-end design release of Overhead Systems components (Headliner, Sun Visor, Grab Handle, Overhead Console, Interior Lighting, Microphones, Cameras) across Client vehicle programs.
  • Own and manage all technical data: 3D/2D CAD releases, GD&T drawings, PBOM/eBOM, piece numbers, and engineering documentation throughout execution.
  • Drive supplier engagement through all APQP gates including design reviews, DFMEA development, tooling feasibility, and deliverable tracking.
  • Build and manage DVP&R plans; coordinate validation testing for durability, environmental, thermal, NVH, abuse, and safety requirements.
  • Lead DFMEA development and ensure sign-off aligns with tooling release gates.
  • Support prototype builds (Mule, VP, PPAP, Launch) and resolve fit, finish, and integration issues.
  • Manage tooling milestones (T1/T2/T3), dimensional approvals, CMM reviews, and PPAP/PSW submissions.
  • Apply root cause analysis tools (5-Why, KT, Red X) to resolve design and manufacturing issues.
  • Manage CNs/ECNs in Teamcenter and coordinate cross-functional approvals.
  • Perform manufacturing and assembly feasibility studies and drive DFM/DFMA optimization.
  • Maintain issue logs and present risk status to management.
  • Conduct benchmarking and identify cost reduction opportunities.

Preferred Education

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field.

Preferred Experience Essential

  • 8+ years of automotive Product Design & Development experience in Interior Trim and/or Lighting Components with direct DRE execution experience on Overhead Systems.
  • Expert proficiency in CATIA V5/V6 or NX/UG for 3D design, 2D drawings, GD&T, and master sections.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Teamcenter with full ownership of eBOM/PBOM and CN/ECN processing.
  • Deep knowledge of DFM/DFMA and DFMEA aligned to APQP gate requirements.
  • Experience with interior manufacturing processes including injection molding, compression molding, plastic welding, foaming, vacuum forming, and thermoforming.
  • Ownership of DVP&R planning and validation testing execution.
  • Proficiency in root cause analysis tools (5-Why, KT, Red X).
  • Leadership in cross-functional design issue resolution and supplier management through APQP and PPAP/PSW.
