The Closures Systems Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, and validation of vehicle closure systems, such as side doors, hood, fender, liftgate, tailgate, and related hardware. This role focuses on sheet metal structures and mechanical hardware integration, supporting products from concept through production launch while ensuring structural integrity, manufacturing feasibility, and compliance with functional and safety requirements.

What you'll do

  • Lead sub-system mechanical development and integration of closure systems, including sheet metal, latches, hinges, hardware, struts, and handles.
  • Design and develop closure panels, reinforcements, and interfaces using CAD (3DX/CATIA).
  • Package and integrate moving mechanical components, ensuring proper kinematics and clearance.
  • Define and execute Design Verification Plans (DVP&R).
  • Coordinate testing for durability, strength, and environmental performance and correlate results with CAE simulations.
  • Collaborate with Studio Design to maintain Class A surface feasibility while meeting structural and sealing requirements.
  • Work with manufacturing teams to optimize designs for stamping, hemming, welding, bonding, and assembly.
  • Manage supplier technical delivery to meet functional, weight, and cost targets.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues during development, prototype builds, and vehicle launch phases.
  • Own CAD, BOM, and GD&T documentation for assigned closure sub-systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in production vehicle development and launch.
  • 3+ years of CAD experience using 3DX or CATIA for automotive body or closure systems.
  • Experience in the design and release of sheet metal components or mechanical hardware.

Preferred Experience

  • Understanding of closure-specific requirements including hemming, sealing systems, and door-retention kinematics.
  • Knowledge of mechanism kinematics, linkages, and electromechanical integration.
  • Experience with sheet metal stamping, casting, and materials science.
  • Ability to use CAE tools for structural integrity and mechanism analysis.
  • Familiarity with FMVSS and global safety standards.
  • Experience with DVP&R testing, including cycle, slam, and environmental validation.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and tolerance impacts on vehicle quality.
  • Hands-on experience with physical prototyping and production build events.

Compensation

Salary Range: $120,000-$140,000/K
