Description

Financing & Retail Systems is seeking an experienced Server-side Software Engineer to build reliable, seamless experiences for Apple customers and Retail Store employees worldwide. You will join a hands-on backend development team delivering scalable, secure, and fault-tolerant solutions, working closely with QA, product, and external carrier partners. The role includes backend design and implementation, production troubleshooting, and improving service performance and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Design and build scalable backend services and APIs for device activation, plan selection, pricing, and order management with major carriers.
• Develop, test, and deploy high-quality features across the full lifecycle, from technical design through release and production support.
• Integrate with carrier systems and internal platforms, translating carrier requirements into well-documented solutions.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues using logs and monitoring to prevent recurrence.
• Improve performance, reliability, and maintainability of existing services (order, pricing, and fulfillment flows).
• Collaborate with product managers, QA engineers, program managers, and carrier partners to define requirements and deliver on schedule.
• Review code, participate in design discussions, and help set engineering standards and mentor teammates.
• Write and maintain automated tests, documentation, and runbooks to keep services easy to operate.

Requirements

• B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent professional work experience.
• 5+ years proven experience developing software professionally (longer experience preferred).
• 2+ years proven experience with Java, including concurrency, memory management, and performance optimization.
• Proficiency in OOP principles, data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns with a focus on testable, maintainable, extensible backend code.
• Production experience building applications with the Spring ecosystem (e.g., Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Data, Spring Cloud), including dependency injection, auto-configuration, WebFlux, and Spring-based microservices patterns.
• Experience designing and implementing APIs, including RESTful APIs, gRPC, GraphQL, contract-first design (OpenAPI/Swagger, Protobuf), API versioning, gateway patterns, rate limiting, and backward compatibility.
• Experience with message-driven and event-driven architectures, including Kafka/RabbitMQ/ActiveMQ, event sourcing, CQRS, and reliable asynchronous communication.
• Experience with relational (Oracle/Postgres/MySQL) and NoSQL (Cassandra/MongoDB) databases, including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning (execution plan analysis, indexing strategy, query rewriting).
