Staff Software Engineer (Platform) — Remote (US); occasional travel to Brisbane, CA (2–3 times/year). Reports to the Director of Engineering, Platform.

Description

Lead the design, development, and operation of maintainable, scalable, and reliable backend software for a Real World Evidence (RWE) engine. Build system and data integrations connecting commercial products and external providers with analytical platforms to create reliable, traceable datasets for evidence generation. Partner with cross-functional teams to turn business needs into technical strategy and execution, while using AI tools to automate RWD workflows and improve data quality.

Responsibilities

• Lead backend software design, development, and operational excellence.
• Build integrations that connect data sources to analytical platforms and enable a feedback loop for research and product development.
• Work with TPMs and subject-matter experts to translate product requirements into technical strategy and incremental delivery.
• Partner with the Real World Data team to evolve the tech stack, identify workflow bottlenecks, and build reusable data curation/analysis tools.
• Use AI tools to scale RWD workflows by automating manual operations, reducing data curation effort, and improving data quality.
• Evaluate technologies and data providers through focused proofs of concept.
• Lead code and design reviews; champion engineering best practices and a culture of quality and collaboration.
• Contribute to hiring and mentoring to improve team capability and productivity.

Requirements

• BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
• 10+ years shipping production software (backend/platform preferred) and 2+ years as a lead developer.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL.
• Ability to build and operate distributed systems using Infrastructure as Code on public cloud platforms (Azure or Google Cloud preferred).
• Expertise developing and running containerized software with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Track record building and operating data pipelines and integrations (ingestion, database replication, analytical data modeling, and/or data quality validation).
• Experience processing and storing sensitive data (e.g., PHI) with access controls, audit logging, and secure data handling.
• Software architecture leadership, including clean code, clear design docs and ADRs, and constructive technical decision-making.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
