Description

Build and operate backend services for a next-generation workflow underwriting platform. Convert ambiguous underwriting problems into simple, reliable software while shaping architecture across APIs, domain models, persistence, reliability, and observability. Design agent-assisted workflows with clear judgment on where agents act, advise, or where humans must stay in control.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate backend services in Kotlin or Java, owning them in production
• Turn ambiguous underwriting problems into reliable software, including deciding what to build
• Shape architectural decisions: APIs, domain models, persistence, reliability, observability, and platform evolution
• Develop deep underwriting domain knowledge and challenge requirements when appropriate
• Design and build agent-assisted workflows with accountable decisions on agent vs. human control
• Use AI coding tools (including Claude) while staying accountable for quality, security, and correctness
• Collaborate across frontend, product partners, and client-facing teams
• Give and take direct feedback to raise the engineering bar

Requirements

• Strong experience building and running backend systems in Kotlin, Java, or another JVM language
• Judgment in architecture and system design
• Evidence of shipping software that solved a real customer or business problem (ideally end-to-end ownership)
• Self-starting approach focused on high-value problems
• Clear communication with underwriters, executives, and engineers
• Comfort working on ambiguous, open-ended problems
• Confident, responsible use of AI coding tools with a critical eye
• Receptive to direct feedback and able to help raise engineering standards
• Willingness to work directly with non-technical stakeholders to understand domain challenges
