Mechanical NPI Engineer (Droid/EV3 Hardware)

Senior • On-site

175,000 - 215,000 USD/yr

South San Francisco, CA

Quick Facts

  • Role: Mechanical NPI Engineer for the EV3 “droid” delivery container subsystems

  • Focus: End-to-end execution from DVT/PVT through tooling release, first-article build, and full-rate production ramp

  • Key outputs: Test campaign ownership, NPI/production line setup at contract manufacturers, supplier/ECO/deviation execution

Description

Own droid mechanical subsystems and drive them through the full NPI funnel—from design through DVT, PVT, tooling release, first article, and full-rate production. You’ll lead test campaigns (plan, fixtures, run, and root-cause), stand up NPI/production lines with contract manufacturers, and keep the program moving with Jira/issue-tracking, ECOs, and deviation management. You’ll also make drawing-ready CAD changes (Siemens NX) and work closely with design, test, TPM, supply chain, quality, and manufacturing engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Drive droid subsystems from design phase through DVT, PVT, tooling release, first-article, and ramp to full-rate production

  • Own test campaigns: write test plans, coordinate fixtures, run campaigns, and drive root-cause on failures

  • Stand up NPI and production lines at contract manufacturers: process definition, work instructions, operator training, line balancing, yield ramp, and early full-rate support

  • Serve as a point person for supplier communication, ECOs, deviation management, and Jira/issue-tracking hygiene

  • Modify and improve existing designs based on DFM, testing, or production learnings; make drawing-ready CAD changes with revision control

  • Partner with design engineers, test engineers, and TPM; collaborate cross-functionally with supply chain, quality, and manufacturing engineering

  • Support first-article builds and pilot runs by being present on the production line to catch issues and close the loop with design

  • Travel to manufacturing and supplier partners across multiple countries

  • Bring higher-volume production perspective earlier in design reviews to reduce scale-up risk

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience delivering physical products from design through production

  • Track record taking mechanical designs through full NPI (DVT, PVT, tooling release, first article, ramp-on)

  • Direct experience running or heavily contributing to mechanical/electromechanical test campaigns

  • CAD fluency for complex assemblies (Siemens NX preferred; Creo/CATIA/SolidWorks acceptable)

  • Comfortable with GD&T and tolerance analysis; able to read and mark up production drawings

  • Practical manufacturing knowledge with methods such as injection molding, composites, foam molding, stamping, and/or CNC machining

  • Supplier engagement skills, including running effective FAI reviews and cleanly escalating issues

  • Willingness to travel internationally, sometimes on short notice

  • Ownership mindset for program execution and success

Benefits

  • Target starting cash range: $175,000–$215,000 (based on experience and other factors)

  • Equity compensation

  • Medical, dental, vision

  • PTO and additional benefits
