Description
As a Research Associate, you perform in vivo study work in rodents to support research programs for multiple Insourcing Solutions clients. You collaborate with veterinary staff to ensure laboratory animal health and welfare are maintained in compliance with guidelines and regulations, including approved IACUC protocols.
Responsibilities
- Handle and restrain animals using appropriate procedures.
- Complete formulation and dosing calculations.
- Administer dosing/inoculate test articles using basic techniques (e.g., oral gavage, intravenous, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal).
- Perform basic tissue (e.g., spleen, liver) and blood collection (e.g., cardiac puncture, intravenous).
- Conduct in-life monitoring for body weights, clinical observations, tumor measurements, etc.
- Monitor animal health and welfare while performing technical procedures.
- Prepare studies, including IACUC and study protocol review, collection tube labeling, and room setup.
- Conduct laboratory procedures in compliance with approved IACUC protocols and study plans.
- Operate and maintain lab equipment with guidance (e.g., Isoflurane machine, IVIS, irradiator, and others).
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date lab records/documentation to assure quality and data integrity.
- Document experimental data in technical notebooks or approved electronic files as requested by clients.
- Perform humane euthanasia according to the Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the AVMA Guide on Euthanasia, under the direction of the attending veterinarian or designee.
- Report non-compliance or animal welfare concerns to the appropriate Animal Welfare Team member or IACUC office.
- Collaborate with other personnel within and across teams/departments to complete assignments.
- Attend on-the-job and classroom training; complete required computer-based safety and professional development training by due dates.
- Maintain effective communication with supervisor/leadership and assist in reporting procedural deficiencies and issues.
- Assist Vet Techs and Veterinarians with follow-up checks, treatments, and procedures if needed.
Requirements
To qualify, candidates must meet one of the following education/experience combinations:
- Option 1: High School Diploma or GED AND either (1) minimum 2+ years of lab animal experience OR (2) AALAS certification at minimum ALAT. Preferred: basic in vivo technical skills.
- Option 2: A.A./A.S. or B.A./B.S. in animal or laboratory (life) sciences or related discipline AND minimum 6-12 months lab animal experience. Preferred: basic in vivo technical skills; ALAT certification.
