As a Senior i18n/l10n Engineer, you will design, architect, and implement robust internationalization frameworks and localization pipelines. You will ensure software products are seamlessly adaptable to various languages, regional differences, and technical standards globally. You will collaborate closely with design and engineering teams to build scalable global products.
What you’ll do
- Architect and maintain scalable i18n libraries, frameworks, and localization pipelines across web, mobile, and backend services.
- Refactor legacy codebases to support dynamic locale switching, pluralization, gender agreement, date/time/currency formatting, and right-to-left (RTL) layouts.
- Build and optimize continuous localization pipelines with CI/CD integrations that automate resource-file extraction, translation management system (TMS) syncing, and build-time validation.
- Maintain high i18n coding standards, conduct code reviews, and mentor junior engineers on global-readiness best practices.
- Partner with UX Designers to ensure global design requirements are met early in the product lifecycle.
- Participate in the on-call rotation; be available while on call to respond to and triage issues.
- Approach work with a growth mindset and leverage AI to make faster, smarter decisions.
Who you are
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years dedicated to software internationalization (i18n) and localization (l10n).
- Proficiency in TypeScript and JavaScript, with hands-on experience building applications or libraries using React or similar frameworks.
- Deep understanding of Unicode standards, CLDR (Common Locale Data Repository), ICU formatting, and BCP 47 locale codes.
- Hands-on experience with i18n libraries such as i18next, react-intl, or formatjs, and translation management systems such as Phrase, Smartling, or Transifex.
- Strong knowledge of frontend localization challenges, including RTL layout rendering, CSS logical properties, and font fallback strategies.
- Experience integrating localization workflows into CI/CD pipelines, such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins, and working with JSON, XLIFF, PO, and YAML serialization formats.
