Description

Build and maintain production-grade, user-centered web applications that help learners, educators, and librarians discover and engage with JSTOR content. While your primary expertise is frontend engineering, you will lead complex technical initiatives end-to-end—from technical design through deployment, experimentation, and production operations. Senior engineers also provide technical leadership and mentorship for complex initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, deploy, monitor, and maintain production web applications

• Develop intuitive, performant, reliable, and accessible user interfaces

• Build and integrate APIs and backend services to deliver end-to-end product experiences

• Instrument applications for analytics, experimentation, and observability

• Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, User Research, Data Science, and Engineering to solve user problems

• Create technical documentation and design artifacts

• Use product, operational, and engineering metrics to evaluate decisions and continuously improve quality

• Participate in an on-call rotation supporting production systems

Requirements

• Mid: 2+ years of experience; Senior: 5+ years of experience

• Experience building production web applications with React, Vue, or similar frameworks using TypeScript, modern HTML, and CSS

• Strong frontend skills: responsive design, accessibility, performance, and maintainable architecture

• Experience integrating with REST or GraphQL APIs

• Ability to contribute to GraphQL services and AWS Lambda functions using Node.js or Python (or similar)

• Experience with automated testing, production debugging, and monitoring/observability practices

• Familiarity with CI/CD and cloud-hosted deployment workflows

• Experience with Git-based development, code reviews, and technical documentation

• Ability to use user feedback, product data, or operational metrics to inform engineering decisions

• Senior-level: Lead complex initiatives from concept through production; guide architecture decisions; mentor engineers
