Self-service analytics for a global life sciences company

A global life sciences company wanted its people to query and visualize enterprise data themselves, without a per-seat licence for every employee who occasionally needs to look at a number. MindPal engineers contributed to two of the applications built to make that possible, working inside the client's own engineering organization alongside their in-house developers.

Who they are

Analytics that had to work across the whole organization

Our client is a global life sciences company with operations in nearly every market it sells into, and engineering and analytics staff spread across them. The work wasn't scoped to a single department. It sat inside a company-wide self-service analytics programme, serving users across research, regulatory, and quality functions.

The brief was never “build us a dashboard.” It was: give people direct access to their own data, in the tools they already work in.

The problem

Enterprise BI that didn't scale on price

Commercial platforms solve this problem, at a per-seat cost that becomes hard to defend at organization-wide scale. Licensing a full BI suite for every employee who occasionally needs to look at data wasn't a workable line item.

Underneath the licensing question sat a slower, more expensive one: data preparation. Getting a dataset into a state where it could actually be looked at consumed analyst time that should have gone to interpreting it.

Already in the spreadsheet

MindPal engineers contributed to two distinct internal applications. They are technically independent of one another, with different codebases and different purposes:

  • A self-service query and visualization application.Connects to data sources and lets users query them directly. Results are rendered through an open-source charting engine, and several visualizations can be composed into a single-screen view.
  • An Analysis for Office add-in.Extends the spreadsheet-based analysis workflow the organization already runs on, letting analysts work with enterprise data directly in the sheet instead of switching to a separate tool.

How we worked

Embedded in the client's engineering organization

These applications belong to the client. They run their own development teams, set their own direction, and own the roadmap and the code. MindPal engineers worked as part of that effort, contributing to design and implementation over a multi-year engagement, on the client's brief and to the client's standards.

That's a different engagement model from a fixed-scope integrator drop-in, and it's the one we're built for: long-horizon work inside an existing engineering organization, where continuity of people matters more than a signed statement of work.
