Description
ICF is seeking a Principal Grid Analytics Engineer to lead a growing team and help shape electric utility solutions through advanced power systems modeling and analytics.
You will manage and mentor engineers, coordinate project planning and client status updates, and deliver grid analyses such as short circuit, power flow, arc flash hazard ratings, voltage imbalance, thermal ampacity, and transmission line assessment using 3D/LiDAR inputs.
The role also focuses on automation to improve efficiency and accuracy of modeling and analysis workflows.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a small team for power systems modeling and analytics
- Mentor and train less experienced engineers
- Perform project management activities (forecasting, tracking hours, budgeting, milestones, scheduling, task delegation)
- Interact with prospective clients and help develop scopes of work, timelines, and budgets
- Provide weekly client project status updates
- Create, revise, and maintain transmission short circuit models (CAPE, ASPEN)
- Create, revise, and maintain transmission power flow models (PSSE, PSCAD)
- Create, revise, and maintain distribution system models (CYME, Synergi, WindMil)
- Perform arc flash analysis to calculate hazard ratings
- Analyze transmission line modeling based on LiDAR and 3D models (PLS-CADD)
- Perform voltage imbalance analysis (PSCAD)
- Calculate thermal ampacity ratings according to FAC-008, FERC-881, and IEEE standards
- Write thorough technical reports summarizing findings
- Develop automation scripts using Python, SQL, and VBA
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, power engineering, or a related field
- 12+ years of electrical engineering experience in transmission and distribution system modeling, short circuit and power flow analysis, arc flash hazard calculations, voltage imbalance studies, and/or thermal ampacity ratings
- 5+ years of experience working at an electric utility (investor-owned, municipal, or electric cooperative)
- U.S.-only eligibility due to fully remote work
