Description

Lead and deliver database infrastructure initiatives, including platform upgrades, standardization, estate hygiene, and decommissioning. Build and manage database environments to support a shift toward reduced physical server deployments and optimized cost. Apply security patches and critical updates, evaluate new database technologies (with proof-of-concepts), and provide database consultancy to project teams on design, resilience, performance, backup/recovery, and operational readiness.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver database infrastructure initiatives (upgrades, standardisation, estate hygiene, decommissioning)
  • Build and manage database environments, supporting reduced physical server deployments and cost optimization
  • Assess and deploy security patches and critical updates to meet internal controls and risk requirements
  • Evaluate new database technologies and features and produce proof-of-concepts for safe adoption (including cloud DB services where applicable)
  • Consult GPBW project teams on database design, resilience, performance, backup/recovery, and operational readiness
  • Create clear documentation: standards, procedures, implementation guides, and runbooks
  • Report progress and risks to management with delivery status, issues, dependencies, and remediation plans
  • Support change and incident activities: troubleshooting and root cause analysis; participate in an on-call/rota

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on experience with at least one enterprise RDBMS: Oracle (RMAN, Data Guard, RAC, Exadata), DB2, PostgreSQL, or SQL Server
  • Ability to learn and adopt new database technologies quickly
  • Experience with shell scripting and automation (Bash, PowerShell, Python, Ansible)
  • Strong understanding of IT operations, including incident/change management and controlled production practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Comfortable working under pressure and to tight deadlines, including out-of-hours support
