SQL Server Database Administrator

Role Overview

Join the IT Operations team as an experienced Database Administrator responsible for the availability, performance, security, and lifecycle management of Microsoft SQL Server platforms that support business-critical applications in a 24/7 enterprise environment.

Act as a technical authority for database operations, contribute to automation initiatives, and collaborate closely with infrastructure, application, and project teams.

This role follows a hybrid working model, with a minimum on-site presence of 8 days per month. It is not fully remote because close collaboration with operations, infrastructure, and project teams is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Database Platform & Operations

  • Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments (2016 and above).
  • Ensure stable and reliable database operations across development, test, and production environments.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, approximately 7–10 days per month.

Performance, Availability & Recovery

  • Monitor database health, performance, and capacity.
  • Analyze and resolve performance issues using native SQL Server tools.
  • Design and maintain backup, restore, and recovery strategies.
  • Implement and operate High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions.

Security & Compliance

  • Ensure database security, integrity, and access controls.
  • Protect databases against unauthorized access and evolving threats.
  • Support audit, compliance, and operational best practices.

Automation & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and maintain automation scripts and operational tooling using PowerShell, Ansible, and dbatools.
  • Continuously improve database standards, procedures, and operational efficiency.
  • Provide metrics and reporting on database usage, performance, and reliability.

Collaboration & Support

  • Work closely with application teams, developers, and project teams.
  • Respond to incidents and user-reported issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing within the team.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator for Microsoft SQL Server (2016+).
  • Strong expertise in SQL and database performance tuning and optimization.
  • Solid experience with backup/restore strategies and recovery models.
  • Practical knowledge of High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions.
  • Experience with Windows Server environments, including Active Directory.
  • Proven problem-solving skills and an analytical mindset.
  • Strong English communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a 24/7 operational environment.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a strong sense of ownership.

Nice to Have / Assets

  • Experience with SQL Server Always On.
  • Experience with SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Exposure to Azure SQL Databases or hybrid environments.
  • Experience with dbatools.
  • Familiarity with ServiceNow and Azure DevOps.
  • Experience with Oracle, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB.
  • Microsoft SQL Server certifications and/or Azure certifications such as AZ-900.

Employment Arrangement

This is a permanent position; freelance and contract arrangements are not offered.
