Description

You will help design, build, operate, and continuously improve the DZA’s backup and restore infrastructure. The role focuses on robust, scalable backup/restore processes, data integrity, availability, and disaster recovery—integrated with virtualized environments and supported by the HPC environment at TU Dresden.

Responsibilities

  • Build, operate, and further develop the DZA backup and restore infrastructure
  • Ensure data integrity, system availability, and disaster recovery capabilities (business continuity management)
  • Automate and monitor backup processes; implement monitoring and reporting solutions
  • Integrate backup solutions in virtualized environments (snapshot, image, and file-level backups)
  • Collaborate with internal departments, TU Dresden (HPC environment), and external project partners
  • Support planning and implementation of security and compliance measures (BSI IT-Grundschutz, GDPR)
  • Develop and document operating, recovery, and emergency procedures
  • Contribute to designing and optimizing a scalable DevOps infrastructure for future research projects

Requirements

  • Completed university degree in Computer Science or a related natural science/technical field
  • Multi-year experience in backup and restore environments, ideally HPC or large data contexts
  • Knowledge of HPC architectures, including batch job systems (e.g., Slurm, PBS Pro, LSF) and parallel file systems
  • Experience with HPC, especially distributed file systems (e.g., CephFS, Lustre)
  • Strong Unix/Linux skills, shell scripting, and automation (cron jobs, scripting)
  • Basic knowledge of network protocols and experience operating backup infrastructure in virtualized environments
  • Understanding of IT security and compliance (data integrity, encryption, GDPR, BSI IT-Grundschutz, disaster recovery)
  • Interest in radio astronomy and processing extremely large datasets
  • Proactive, solution-oriented and team-oriented working style
  • Good English and German written and spoken skills
