Motion Sensing Hardware Engineer

Mid

Carlsbad, CA

Quick Facts

  • Role: Motion sensing hardware engineering (characterization, testing, and validation)

Description

You will characterize motion sensing performance across environments, develop and maintain test tools and measurement methods, and recommend design changes to improve detection accuracy and reduce false positives/negatives. You will diagnose root causes using a scientific approach, define sensing system metrics, and work cross-functionally (Firmware, ODM/technology partners) to resolve issues and enhance performance. You will evaluate motion sensing technologies for future products and support validation activities including factory build performance checks.

Responsibilities

  • Characterize product performance in different environments; report results; suggest design changes and improvements (detection range, field of view, angular/range accuracy, true/false positive performance).
  • Diagnose engineering issues with a scientific method to reach definitive root cause.
  • Define and update sensing system metrics that drive improvements in customer-perceived performance.
  • Work cross-functionally with Firmware, ODM partners, and technology partners to resolve issues and improve performance.
  • Develop repeatable, reproducible, and automated measurement methods/tools/equipment for thorough sensor validation on tight schedules.
  • Support engineering factory build activities with performance validation measurements, yield optimization, and failure analysis coordination.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations and test reports to communicate technical status, risks, and mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with Compliance to ensure technology meets compliance requirements.

Requirements

  • Experience integrating a commercial mmWave radar solution into a shipping product.
  • Working knowledge of radar fundamentals (range/velocity/angle resolution, point-cloud and tracking outputs).
  • Hands-on tuning of detection and tracking parameters against real test data to meet product spec targets (range, detection accuracy, false-positive/negative rates).
  • Comfort across hardware and firmware, including debugging timing/GPIO-level issues (e.g., TTFF analysis).
  • Experience working directly with third-party technology vendors to optimize device configuration and algorithms for specific use cases.
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization in Python.
  • Ability to report test data clearly and succinctly (plots, graphs, result tables).
  • Education: BSEE or MSEE.

Nice-to-haves

  • Hands-on experience with third-party commercial SDKs (device configuration, parameter tuning, extracting detection/point-cloud data).
  • Experience with Passive Infrared Sensors.

Benefits

  • Equal opportunity employer; commitment to inclusivity and harassment-free workplace.
  • Reasonable accommodations for applicants/employees with disabilities, pregnancy/medical conditions, or sincerely held religious beliefs.
  • Consideration under applicable Fair Chance Laws and Ordinances for qualified applicants with arrest/conviction records.
