Role Purpose

The Senior Data Designer supports the business by deciding which data should be ingested from source systems into the Enterprise Data Warehouse and how it should be transformed for reporting and other downstream systems.

The role is accountable for analysing and documenting source-system data to meet business requirements; determining data-ingestion methods and frequency; defining and documenting data mapping, harmonisation, derivations, calculations and other transformations; and ensuring the target data model is coherent and works with other data warehouse models.

Responsibilities

  • Design data warehouse solutions driven by business demand.
  • Understand complex solution requirements and clarify them with the business when needed.
  • Identify and document required data sources; analyse and profile their data; and work with source-system or business experts to understand how business processes create and update data.
  • Create and maintain logical and physical data models, working with the Platform Data Architect to align with the data roadmap and principles.
  • Create and update source-to-target mappings, define transformations and calculations, and capture metadata such as attribute definitions, datatypes and PII classification, in line with principles and conventions.
  • Support Data Engineers with implementation of designs.
  • Support Quality Engineers with testing of data warehouse objects.
  • Guide junior team members on data modelling and technical best practices.
  • Support the wider team with ad-hoc design or analysis work.

Required Skills

  • Intermediate-level SQL querying, including data profiling
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proactive and curious mindset
  • Collaborative approach to work
  • 2 years' experience as a data modeller or 5 years' experience working with data in data warehouses
  • Data quality management experience

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with non-tabular data and event-based data processing
  • Understanding of data lifecycle management
  • Experience working with data in Databricks
