Responsibilities

The Data Engineer III leads pipeline development, data transformation, and secure data integration activities supporting the VA Office of Information & Technology (OIT) IT Budget and Finance (ITBF).

  • Oversee planning, monitoring, and maintenance of data assets provided by the Data Centralization and Business Intelligence (DCBI) team.
  • Support existing ETL packages, validation scripts, and migration workflows for ingestion into Apptio using Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
  • Work with data owners and the VA Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) support team to develop new SSIS packages for additional data sources.
  • Maintain a SSIS Job Maintenance Log to track updates and changes to SSIS-based data interfaces and staging processes.
  • Update existing SSIS packages based on upstream system changes.
  • Manage data staging and loading into production environments.
  • Coordinate resolution of help desk tickets (Levels 1–3) related to data assets and integration environments.
  • Perform tuning and indexing of operational databases.
  • Provide sustainment and troubleshooting for Microsoft Power BI reports and scheduled refreshes.
  • Maintain technical documentation including ICDs, DFDs, ERDs, SOPs, and CoE materials.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in data engineering, data integration, or related technical roles.
  • Expertise in building and managing data pipelines using SSIS.
  • Strong SQL skills for data engineering and automation.
  • Hands-on experience developing and troubleshooting Power BI reports, semantic models, and scheduled dataset refreshes in Power BI Service, including DAX and M.
  • Experience implementing data lineage tracking and documentation.
  • Experience with legacy, heterogeneous, and distributed data environments.
  • Background in DoD, federal healthcare, or compliance-driven settings.
  • Eligibility for Tier 1 background investigation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with the VA Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) support team.
  • Experience resolving issues within the VA Power BI Service hosting environment.
  • Experience supporting CDW data exposed in SAAS cubes.
