About the Role
The Automation Manager is responsible for building and leading the automation and controls infrastructure that keeps the sodium-ion battery manufacturing facility running at full capacity, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across a 4-shift operation. This role is both strategic and deeply technical, with direct input into control system architecture, team development, equipment commissioning, and operational procedure creation.
The Sacramento manufacturing facility is in the planning and build-out phase. This role will participate in equipment design reviews and international Factory Acceptance Tests, while building the controls team, procedures, and documentation standards from day one.
This position requires operating at both the technical and organizational level—debugging control system issues and defining procedures that prevent recurrence.
What You'll Do
- Lead the controls and automation function, maintaining system uptime across a 24/7, 4-shift schedule
- Participate in equipment design reviews, advising on automation architecture, PLC compatibility, and control specifications
- Lead and participate in international FATs and SATs for industrial manufacturing equipment
- Build and develop a team of Controls Engineers and Technicians (7–12 members)
- Define shift coverage models, escalation protocols, and automation response procedures
- Establish and maintain PLC architecture standards using Beckhoff TwinCAT
- Implement PLC-to-MES connectivity for real-time production data and traceability
- Create and maintain automation documentation and change management procedures
- Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing leadership to align automation with production goals
- Own KPIs including uptime, MTTR, alarm rationalization, and preventive maintenance compliance
- Enforce safety standards including emergency shutdown procedures and safety interlocks
- Drive continuous improvement to increase yield and throughput
