Quality Engineer - AI Enablement
Senior • Hybrid
Warsaw, Poland
Location: Hybrid 2 days per week, based in Warsaw (Czackiego 15/17).
We're open to candidates based outside Warsaw, provided the 2-day commitment is realistically sustainable from where you live. Please don't treat this as a starting point for negotiation - we value the structure and consistency it brings and we want you to see the value in it too. If you're based further away, we'll assume openness to relocation is part of the conversation.
About hyperexponential (hx)
At hyperexponential, we're building the AI-powered platform that enables the world's most critical decisions in a $7 trillion industry, which risks to take, and how to price them. These are the decisions that shape real-world outcomes: whether rockets successfully launch into space, autonomous vehicles make it to market, or communities recover after major storms.
Until now, insurance has been making billion-dollar decisions using outdated tools. We're changing that. Our platform brings together data, AI, and human expertise to give insurers the fastest path from submission to decision - helping them move faster, act smarter, and take on more risk with confidence.
Backed by a16z, Highland Europe, and Battery Ventures, we're scaling globally - already trusted by nearly 50 of the world's largest insurers, with zero churn and billions in premiums flowing through hx.
What began as a single product in one market has rapidly evolved into a multi-product, multi-territory platform powering every stage of pricing and underwriting. AI is at the core of what we do - from building the world's first domain-specific AI peer programmer for insurance (think GitHub Copilot with a PhD in actuarial science) to shaping agentic workflows that reinvent how this industry operates.
What makes hx different is the people who build it. Here, impact isn't tied to title or tenure; it's defined by the challenges you take on and the discipline you bring. Surrounded by peers who stretch you, you'll do the best, hardest work of your life in a company engineered to endure.
If that sounds like you, join us in building what comes next.
About the team
Quality Engineering at hx is undergoing a strategic shift. We're moving from an embedded model, where QEs sit in product teams and deliver hands-on testing, to an enablement model, where a small central team builds the tools, standards, and coaching that help every engineer own quality. It's one of hx's boldest engineering experiments: making quality genuinely self-service without sacrificing the rigour our customers rely on.
The team sits at the intersection of test automation, AI tooling, release readiness, and organisational change. We're building AI-powered systems that make end-to-end test creation accessible to all engineers, automate failure classification and routing, and provide the standards, guidance, and feedback loops teams need to make better quality decisions independently. That means shaping quality strategy, improving release risk assessment, and establishing lightweight, scalable processes for staging, deployment, and learning from failure. This is strategic work with company-wide impact, requiring technical depth, strong technical judgement, coaching capability, and comfort with ambiguity.
As the third member of this newly formed team, you'll join at a pivotal moment. You'll contribute to the managed transition away from embedded QE support, take ownership of AI-powered automation tools still being defined, and build the foundations that allow hx to scale quality across dozens of engineering teams. Your work will shape whether teams can ship independently, whether release processes stay fast and trusted as we grow, and whether hx can maintain velocity without compromising reliability.
Check out our Engineering Candidate Hub for a behind the scenes look at the team you would be joining!
What you'll be doing
Accelerate the development and adoption of hx's AI-powered end-to-end test writing agent, improving its accuracy and framework coverage to the point where at least 15 engineers across 5+ teams are independently writing E2E tests within six months of widespread release.
Design and deploy an AI-powered nightly build analyser that automatically classifies test failures and routes them to owning teams, reducing daily manual review effort by 80% and proving reliable enough to extend to the release pipeline.
Establish quality self-service foundations for product teams by delivering test design guidance, executable E2E framework documentation (as AI agent specifications), quality standards references, and release risk assessment templates that enable at least three teams to complete release assessments without direct QE involvement.
Support the managed withdrawal of QE support from embedded product teams by contributing to fixed-scope deliverables that ensure no critical gaps in E2E coverage or delivery confidence, enabling both current QEs to transition on schedule with no unplanned regressions.
Grow E2E test coverage across the organisation through coaching, pairing, and AI tooling support, increasing the number of product teams writing their own E2E tests to at least 50% within the first 12 months.
Build credibility and influence across engineering teams by working alongside engineers to solve real quality challenges, demonstrating the value of team-owned quality through concrete examples rather than process mandates, and making quality ownership feel like teams' own goal rather than an external requirement.
What you'll need to have done
Built AI-powered tools or automations in production environments (e.g., prompt engineering, agent design, RAG pipelines, or CI-integrated analysis), demonstrating the ability to design solutions others rely on rather than just using AI assistants as coding aids.
Designed and implemented automated test strategies across multiple test levels (unit, integration, E2E) for complex systems, making sound judgements about what to test at which level and communicating those trade-offs clearly to non-specialist engineers.
Owned end-to-end test automation using Python and Playwright (or equivalent frameworks), writing clean, maintainable tests with clear patterns that other engineers can extend, including experience managing flaky test suites and establishing conventions for new automation from scratch.
Coached or enabled engineering teams to improve their testing practices through hands-on pairing and mentoring, demonstrating measurable improvements in team capability such as increased test coverage, reduced manual testing dependencies, or improved release confidence.
Influenced quality improvements across teams you didn't directly manage, building credibility through practical demonstration and making benefits concrete rather than relying on process mandates or formal authority.
Operated effectively in environments characterised by ambiguity and rapid change, taking ownership of problems from identification through to iterative solution, and adapting approach based on feedback without losing momentum.
You're unlikely to thrive here if
You prefer clearly defined processes and established playbooks over building the systems and standards from first principles in a rapidly evolving environment.
You're more comfortable being the person who delivers quality work directly rather than enabling others to build that capability themselves, or you measure success primarily by your own output rather than what teams can achieve independently.
You view AI tools with scepticism or aren't genuinely curious about how to apply them practically to solve real engineering problems, or you're unwilling to learn new languages and frameworks as the problem demands.
If reading our Culture Document leaves you feeling neutral rather than energised, hx may not be the place where you'll do your best work. We're building something that asks for commitment and conviction, and we want you to feel excited by the opportunity to grow with us.

Senior Quality Engineer
Senior
Hybrid
Krakow, Poland
17,000 - 23,000 PLN
🏢 Summary: The offer is for a Quality Engineer embedded within frontend teams to drive a shift from traditional testing to a quality-first engineering culture. The role focuses on modernising test architecture, implementing contract testing, and optimising CI/CD pipelines to enable fast, reliable, and independent frontend delivery. You will coach developers, build robust automation frameworks, and ensure high-confidence deployments in a modern JS ecosystem. 🗂️ Requirements: Deep experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Vue, or Next.js), Strong experience in frontend test automation and architecture, Experience implementing contract testing (Consumer-Driven Contracts), Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipeline optimisation, Experience with service virtualization and mocking strategies, Experience with Playwright and visual regression testing, Ability to design testable component-based architectures, Experience with observability tools and error tracking in QA, Ability to eliminate flaky tests and ensure deterministic pipelines 📃 Skills: JavaScript, React, Vue, Next.js, Playwright, Pact, CI/CD, Testing, Automation, Mocking, Virtualization, Contracts, Synthetics, Observability, VisualRegression 🏢 Description: At Smart, our mission is to transform retirement, savings and financial wellbeing, across all generations, around the world. THE ROLE We aren’t looking for a "tester" to catch bugs at the end of a sprint. We are looking for a Quality Engineer who acts as a quality multiplier for our frontend engineering teams (working across more than one squad). Your goal is to move the needle from "testing as a phase" to "quality as a standard." You will be the bridge between rapid UI iteration and bulletproof reliability. By focusing on quality coaching, architectural testability, and a "contract-first" mindset, you will enable our teams to deploy with high confidence, even when the backend is a moving target or unavailable (as a test reference). Key Pillars of the Role: Influence & Cultural Coaching Shift-Left Evangelism: Partner with Product and Tech Leads early in the discovery phase to identify edge cases before a single line of code is written. Quality Mentorship: Coach developers on writing meaningful, low-flake tests. You don’t just find bugs; you teach the team how to architect code that prevents them. The "Quality Mindset": Advocate for a culture where quality is a shared responsibility, not a hand-off. You’ll question the status quo and push for "Quality over Coverage." Infrastructure & Tooling (The "Enabler") Agnostic Delivery: Build and maintain sophisticated mocking and service virtualization strategies (e.g., Pact or similar) to ensure the frontend can be developed, tested, and demoed independently of backend availability. Pipeline Optimisation: Own the teams’ CI/CD feedback loop. You’ll ensure that our pipelines are fast, deterministic, and provide actionable signals, not just a wall of red text. Testing Modernisation: Maintain and extend next-gen tools (Playwright, Visual Regression) that align with a modern component-based architecture. Strategic Delivery Contract Testing: Implement and champion Consumer-Driven Contracts to ensure frontend and backend stay in sync without requiring heavy integrated environments. Observability in QA: Shift your focus from "did it pass?" to "how is it performing?" Using synthetics and error tracking to inform your testing strategy. Risk-Based Strategy: Use data to decide where to automate and where to explore, ensuring we spend our energy on the features that matter most to users, and ensure our SLAs are achieved. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR The skills, experience, and aptitudes we are looking for are listed below but please don’t be discouraged from applying if you don’t meet every single one of these criteria – having a ‘can do’ attitude is sometimes more important than being able to tick every box: Technical Chops - Deep experience / understanding of the modern JS ecosystem (React, Vue, or Next.js) and how to test it. Architectural Thinking - You understand how component libraries impact quality at scale. Communication - The ability to persuade a skeptical developer why a specific architectural change will improve long-term velocity. Bravery - You aren't afraid to stop a release if the process is broken, but you’d rather fix the process so the release never has to stop. WHY THIS ROLE IS DIFFERENT You won't be siloed in a "QA Department." You will be embedded in the heart of delivery. We give you the agency to blow up legacy testing patterns and replace them with lean, modern, and highly-automated workflows. If you believe that speed is a byproduct of quality, we want to talk to you. WHAT SUCCESS IN 6 MONTHS LOOKS LIKE Frontend teams can run a full suite of meaningful tests without a backend connection, and be confident in its quality. "Flaky tests" have been eradicated through better infrastructure and developer education. The team is deploying to production multiple times a day with a "Green Build" that they actually trust. WHO WE ARE We work in partnerships with governments and financial institutions in the UK and internationally. Our cloud-native digital platform is revolutionising how people around the world think about, and save for, their retirement. At heart, we’re a financial technology business. What we do is all about innovation, and using the power of digital change to put the customer first. That feels worthwhile, and it means that what we do, collectively, goes way beyond the nine to five of a typical working day. BENEFITS At Smart, one of the eight principles we work to is “We want happy and good people in our team”. We created a list of benefits that helps us achieve this goal: 26 days’ of paid holiday per year + Polish bank holidays 2250 PLN annual training budget to spend on your professional development Health insurance (including dental care) via TU Inter MultiSport Plus Gym Card Online English lessons during working hours Sick leave in accordance with Polish labour law Paternity and maternity leave in accordance with Polish labour law Additional employer contribution to the Employee Capital Plans (PPK) of 2.5% Death in service insurance cover Fully-paid five-week sabbatical after five years of employment In the Krakow office wellbeing services, such as manicures, massages and barbers At Smart, we are committed to creating an inclusive and equitable workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to do their best work. We believe that diverse perspectives help us lead the way in transforming retirement, savings, and financial wellbeing. We welcome differences in background, experience, thinking, and identity, and we recognise that innovation is strongest when it is built on inclusion and fairness. We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences and do not discriminate on the basis of any protected characteristic. If you require any reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process or in the workplace, we encourage you to let us know - we are committed to supporting you. We think Smart is an awesome place to work. If it sounds like somewhere you’d like to work, too, and if you’re ready to play your part in our continued success in the future, then naturally we’d love to meet you.

If you thrive in environments where system stability and milliseconds directly impact business outcomes, and where manual intervention is treated as a problem to be solved with code, this is the team for you. Key Responsibilities: Design, implement, and maintain advanced telemetry, monitoring, and predictive alerting systems for a global, high-availability network. Develop, scale, and maintain automation tools to streamline network workflows (from automated provisioning to zero-touch deployments). Collaborate closely with engineering and investment teams to align network performance with dynamic business and trading requirements. Define, implement, and maintain configuration standards across a robust multi-vendor environment. Serve as the senior escalation point for troubleshooting and resolving complex performance and routing anomalies. Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation and scheduled out-of-hours maintenance windows. Technical Profile (Technical Fit): Observability-First Mindset: Practical experience with modern monitoring stacks, telemetry protocols, and metrics collection (Prometheus, Grafana, Telegraf, gNMI, YANG, Cisco Telemetry). Automation as a Standard: Strong hands-on experience with automation tools and frameworks such as Ansible, Jinja, Terraform, Netbox, and workflow engines (e.g., Temporal). Infrastructure as Code (IaC) & Dev Skills: Proficiency in Python and Git, with experience managing network configurations programmatically (NETCONF/RESTCONF). Core Networking Foundations: Solid understanding of routing protocols and multicast environments (BGP, OSPF, PIM, IGMP). Public Cloud Integration: Practical knowledge of building and managing cloud network infrastructure (AWS). Advanced Troubleshooting: Ability to perform deep-packet analysis and diagnose complex, transient network issues under pressure. Personal Attributes (Cultural Fit): A continuous learning mindset with a drive to proactively identify and optimize inefficient processes. Ability to work independently, taking ownership of projects and delivering them on schedule with minimal supervision. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, comfortable working in a fast-paced, international team. Strong analytical thinking and decision-making skills under pressure. Bonus Points: Experience integrating enterprise-grade VoIP and cloud collaboration systems. Familiarity with network security, identity management, and segmentation solutions (e.g., Cisco ISE). A basic understanding of financial markets, trading lifecycles, or quantitative trading environments. What We Offer: Stable Employment: Full-time employment contract (Umowa o Pracę - UoP). Tax Optimization: Eligibility for creative tax-deductible costs (KUP - Koszty Uzyskania Przychodu). Financial Reward: Highly competitive base salary accompanied by a generous annual performance bonus. Comprehensive Health: Premium private medical care package that fully includes dental coverage (stomatologia). Wellness & Lifestyle: MultiSport card to keep you active and healthy. Daily Perks: Pre-funded lunch card for your daily meals.
