Description

You will design and evolve shared Ruby frameworks that power REST APIs, asynchronous jobs, and workflow orchestration. You’ll improve availability, reliability, scalability, and performance of backend systems on critical production paths. You’ll also modernize a large Ruby codebase (including moving from Sinatra to Rails) and help speed up backend development through better tooling and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve shared Ruby frameworks for REST APIs, asynchronous jobs, workflow orchestration, and data access
• Improve backend availability, reliability, scalability, and performance
• Modernize the Ruby codebase with safe architectural changes, including moving REST APIs from Sinatra toward Rails and introducing stronger endpoint abstractions and type safety
• Improve developer velocity via hot reloading, local workflows, test infrastructure, CI reliability, debugging tools, and iteration speed
• Strengthen scalability, isolation, observability, and recovery for the asynchronous job platform
• Partner with product engineers and Infrastructure teams to address recurring pain points with reusable platform capabilities
• Establish pragmatic engineering practices through shared libraries, APIs, documentation, tooling, code review, and technical guidance
• Mentor engineers and promote thoughtful execution, high technical standards, and shared ownership

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering
• 3+ years building production systems with Ruby
• Experience building, maintaining, and evolving large Ruby applications/shared backend codebases for multiple engineering teams
• Experience designing reliable distributed systems at production scale (APIs, background processing, testing, observability, operations)
• Experience improving complex, established systems through architecture, modularization, migrations, performance, reliability, or developer tooling
• Ability to create scalable abstractions and collaborate with and mentor engineers across teams

Compensation Transparency

Annual base salary range: $235,000–$376,000 USD
