Description

Oncologists diagnose, stage, and treat patients with various forms of cancer. The role includes medical oncology care using chemotherapy and other medications, radiation oncology providing radiation therapy, and surgical oncology procedures when needed. You will coordinate treatment plans, explain diagnoses and options to patients, manage side effects and symptoms, and maintain clinical records.

Responsibilities

• Explain cancer diagnosis and stage; discuss treatment options

• Manage side effects and symptoms; support pain management

• Lead and coordinate a cancer treatment team

• Prescribe and coordinate treatment plans (including chemotherapy and immunotherapy)

• Provide radiation therapy

• Perform surgical operations to remove tumors and assess spread

• Maintain records, write prescriptions, provide cancer information, and monitor treatment plans

Requirements

• Medical degree with successful completion of residency and fellowship in oncology

• State license and certification to practice oncology

• Compassionate, caring approach with patients

• Thorough, up-to-date knowledge of cancers and treatment options

• Technical skills to operate oncology-related medical equipment and tools

• Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
