Senior Sensor Hardware Engineer (Sensor Fusion)

Senior

100,000 - 354,000 USD/yr

Palo Alto, CA

Quick Facts

  • Role: Senior Sensor Hardware Engineer (Sensor Fusion)

Description

Design end-to-end sensor subsystems for passenger comfort and state. You’ll select sensing principles, sensor types, quantity, and placement, then prototype, analyze multi-sensor data, and refine the suite until it is robust, simple, and cost-effective. You’ll collaborate closely with the algorithm team and help shape fusion approaches, from first prototype through high-volume production.

Responsibilities

  • Own your sensor subsystem end to end, from requirements through production, and be accountable for field performance

  • Architect a multi-sensor sensor suite for passenger comfort and state, including where signals are combined

  • Choose sensors with data by instrumenting prototypes, analyzing what each adds, and reducing to the smallest suite that meets goals

  • Electrical design: create sensor prototypes with schematics, PCB layout, low-noise analog front-ends, and prototype bring-up

  • Mechanical design: develop sensor housings and mounting, and integrate in CAD with HVAC and interior design teams

  • Software/algorithms support: collect and analyze multi-sensor data and help design/validate fusion algorithms with the algorithm team

  • Run test campaigns with people and in vehicles, then convert results into hardware decisions

  • Partner with suppliers and manufacturing to move designs from prototype to production

Requirements

  • Degree in a related field or equivalent experience

  • Proven record of building a feature or product from the ground up and taking it to commercial production

  • Hands-on sensor hardware experience in relevant domains (e.g., thermal/climate/air/gas/optical/MEMS/biometric/wearable/medical/consumer/industrial/appliance/robotics)

  • Experience combining multiple sensors and demonstrating that the combination outperforms any single sensor

  • Strong PCB and analog design; working knowledge of CAD and mechanical integration

  • Strong data analysis skills using Python, MATLAB, or similar; comfort with statistical or machine-learning methods

  • Familiarity with cabin/environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, CO2, VOCs) and basics of human thermal comfort

  • Clear communication, good judgment with incomplete information, and the ability to drive decisions with data

Benefits

  • Competitive pay with eligibility for medical, dental, vision, HSA contribution (when enrolled in an HDHP), FSA, 401(k) match, and Employee Stock Purchase Plans

  • Company paid Basic Life and AD&D; short-term and long-term disability coverage

  • Sick and vacation time (flex time for salary roles); paid holidays

  • Back-up childcare and parenting support resources

  • Voluntary benefits (e.g., critical illness, accident coverage, legal services, pet insurance) and wellness programs (weight loss, tobacco cessation)

  • Employee discounts/perks and commuter benefits

  • Tesla Babies program
