Hardware Compliance Engineer (Product Safety/EMC & Functional Safety)

Description

You will lead safety engineering and compliance efforts for AWS hardware spanning AI/ML, power distribution, and cooling systems deployed in data centers worldwide. You will manage the end-to-end compliance lifecycle, partner with hardware teams and ODM design partners, and coordinate with test agencies, NRTLs, and legal stakeholders to deliver compliant products on tight timelines.

Responsibilities

• Own safety compliance strategy for NPI and sustaining programs, mapping applicable requirements across global markets and executing through certification
• Partner in design reviews to identify safety risks, recommend modifications, and drive first-time test pass rates
• Act as technical interface with NRTLs and Notified Bodies: manage test plans, address findings, and secure timely approvals
• Investigate ODM technical issues with root cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventative measures
• Build and maintain a scalable compliance framework (templates, checklists, process documentation)
• Develop and track certification pipeline metrics (health, cycle time, risk areas) and communicate to leadership
• Monitor evolving global safety regulations and assess impact to the product roadmap

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (or equivalent)
• Experience understanding electrical and mechanical systems involved in critical data center operations (feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS, ATS, PDU, chillers, pumps, air handling)
• 4+ years of progressive experience supporting NPI/NPD design related to product compliance
• Experience with international certification

Preferred Qualifications

• Project management experience for technical projects
• Master’s degree in electrical engineering (or equivalent)
• Experience with National Electrical Code
• Functional safety principles
• Experience with data centers AHJ permitting process
