Description

Lead the vision and strategy for significant VS Code product areas, translating developer needs and emerging AI developer tools into clear priorities and measurable outcomes. Partner end-to-end with engineering, researchers, data science, and design to ship cohesive product experiences, validate with real users, and continuously improve performance and reliability using data and experiments. Bring hands-on technical leadership by coding, self-hosting VS Code, testing extensions and prototypes, and engaging deeply with the open-source and extension ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Define vision, strategy, and measurable outcomes for key product areas by evaluating developer scenarios and emerging technology

• Lead end-to-end delivery across VS Code and GitHub, from early exploration through launch and iteration

• Build developer empathy by writing and debugging code, self-hosting VS Code, testing extensions/prototypes, and staying close to customers via GitHub issues, interviews, and user studies

• Collaborate deeply with engineers on technical and architectural tradeoffs using hands-on experience with VS Code and AI tools

• Use quantitative/qualitative data, run controlled experiments, and make investment decisions that drive measurable product and growth outcomes

• Drive ambiguous, cross-team initiatives by creating clarity, aligning stakeholders, managing tradeoffs, and executing decisions

• Partner with the open-source community and extension ecosystem to sustain community health and enable rapid feedback loops

• Represent VS Code externally through blogs, videos, livestreams, workshops, customer meetings, and conferences

• Stay current on emerging AI developer tools technologies to inform future investments

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree AND 5+ years experience in product/service/program management or software development (or equivalent experience)

• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter

Benefits

• Typical base pay range in the U.S.: USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year (location-dependent ranges apply for San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metro)

• Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation
