Role Overview

The Operational Technology SME Engineer is a senior technical engineering role responsible for the expert design, implementation, optimisation, and ongoing support of Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity solutions. The role provides deep technical expertise to ensure the effective delivery, integration, and BAU operation of OT security capabilities across industrial control systems, including ICS, SCADA, DCS, and IIoT.

Working closely with architecture and engineering teams, the engineer translates solution designs into robust, secure, and maintainable OT systems, with particular focus on Claroty and Cisco technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the subject matter expert for the design, build, configuration, integration, and optimisation of OT cybersecurity solutions, with deep expertise in Claroty and Cisco industrial security technologies.
  • Lead the technical implementation and deployment of new OT security capabilities and enhancements across IT/OT environments.
  • Provide expert engineering support for day-to-day BAU operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and performance tuning of OT security platforms.
  • Collaborate with the Operational Technology Product Manager, Solution Architects, and delivery teams to ensure solutions are implemented effectively and meet business, operational, and security requirements.
  • Develop and maintain technical standards, configuration baselines, automation scripts, and operational procedures for OT security systems.
  • Lead vulnerability remediation, patching, and security hardening activities for OT cybersecurity platforms and connected industrial assets.
  • Support incident response and problem management activities related to OT systems, including root-cause analysis and permanent fixes, while minimising impact on operational continuity.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and team members on OT security technologies and best practices.
  • Monitor system performance, availability, and capacity of OT security tooling, driving continuous improvement and automation initiatives.
  • Contribute to the evaluation and selection of new OT security tools or enhancements within the operational technology domain.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on engineering experience in operational technology or industrial control system security.
  • CISSP, CISM, or equivalent certification.
  • Expert-level technical knowledge of Claroty, Cisco industrial security solutions, OT protocols, and secure IT/OT architectures.
  • Engineering and implementation skills including configuration, integration, scripting, and troubleshooting in OT environments.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities, with a strong focus on operational stability, safety, and security.
  • Ability to translate solution designs into practical, maintainable engineering deliverables in industrial settings.
  • Stakeholder management and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with OT operations teams.
  • Proven mentoring and knowledge-sharing capabilities.
  • Sound understanding of how OT cybersecurity supports operational continuity and risk reduction.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of current and emerging OT-specific cyber threats and defensive technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with OT protocols, segmentation, Purdue Model implementation, and IT/OT convergence environments.
  • Proven track record of implementing and supporting complex OT security solutions in industrial, large-scale, or critical-infrastructure settings.
  • Experience with scripting and automation relevant to OT environments.
  • Knowledge of relevant OT standards and regulations, including IEC 62443, NIS Regulations, and GDPR.
