Principal Computational Engineer, 3D CAD & Geometric Intelligence

Senior • On-site

200,004 - 230,004 USD/yr

North Bethesda, MD

Xometry is seeking a Principal Computational Engineer to set the multi-year technical direction for its 3D geometry and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) platform. You will be the senior individual contributor in this domain, owning the architecture that turns every customer-uploaded CAD model into a manufacturable, priced, and routed part across CNC, sheet metal, additive, injection molding, casting, and finishing processes. This role also serves as the technical architect for the embedded DFM AI + IQE integration with a strategic partner, integrating computational geometry and AI directly into Solid Edge, NX, Designcenter, and Teamcenter to deliver real-time manufacturability feedback and pricing insights.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Vision & Roadmap: Own and drive a multi-year roadmap for the geometric reasoning stack including B-Rep ingestion and healing, feature recognition, DFM analysis, sub-process routing, pricing signals, and CAM/CAE integration.
  • Partnership Integration (DFM AI + IQE): Architect and lead integration into Solid Edge, NX, Designcenter, and Teamcenter using the Parasolid kernel; define geometry contracts and precision/latency budgets for in-CAD feedback.
  • Geometric Kernel Architecture: Implement robust intersection, offset, Boolean, projection, and trimming operations on NURBS; build resilience for malformed CAD and define precision and robustness contracts.
  • DFM & Sub-Process Intelligence: Combine classical computational geometry with ML approaches (graph neural networks on B-Reps, point-cloud and voxel encoders, neural implicit representations) to detect manufacturability risks.
  • Research-to-Production: Translate research into production systems; publish, patent, or open-source where valuable.
  • Leadership: Lead design reviews, mentor engineers, and collaborate cross-functionally to translate business outcomes into algorithmic solutions.

What You'll Bring

  • M.S. or PhD in a relevant technical field with 12+ years of experience (or PhD with 8+ years industry experience).
  • Deep expertise in geometric modeling: NURBS, trimmed surfaces, B-Rep topology, geometry healing, robust predicates, spatial data structures.
  • Experience with geometric kernels such as Parasolid, ACIS, CGM, Granite, ShapeManager, or Open CASCADE.
  • Strong knowledge of CAD formats: STEP, IGES, JT, Parasolid XT, CATIA/NX/Creo/SolidWorks formats, DXF, HOOPS Exchange/PRC.
  • Expert C++ (C++14/17/20) with CMake, debugging, profiling, SWIG or pybind11; strong Python (NumPy, Numba); AWS experience.
  • Strong mathematical foundation in linear algebra, calculus, numerical methods, and floating-point analysis.
  • Familiarity with ML for geometry and manufacturing standards (ISO, ASME Y14.5, GD&T).
  • US Citizen or Green Card holder (ITAR compliance).

What Success Looks Like in 12 Months

  • Production deployment of DFM AI + IQE integration with measurable adoption and defined latency contracts.
  • Documented geometric reasoning architecture with explicit precision and robustness contracts.
  • Expanded DFM coverage across 12+ CNC sub-processes with measurable precision/recall.
  • Published, patented, or open-sourced methodology strengthening technical brand.
  • Demonstrated mentorship impact on senior engineers.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: $200,000–$230,000 annually plus commission.
  • 401(k) match; medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Life and disability insurance.
  • Generous paid time off including vacation, sick leave, holidays, and parental leave.
  • Employee assistance and wellbeing resources.
