Principal Computational Engineer, 3D CAD & Geometric Intelligence

Senior • On-site

200,004 - 230,004 USD/yr

Waltham, MA

Xometry is seeking a Principal Computational Engineer to set the multi-year technical direction for its 3D geometry and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) platform. You will serve as the senior individual contributor, owning the architecture that transforms customer-uploaded CAD models into manufacturable, priced, and routed parts across CNC, sheet metal, additive, injection molding, casting, and finishing processes.

This role also serves as the technical architect for the embedded DFM AI + IQE integration within a partner’s industrial software ecosystem, including Solid Edge, NX, Designcenter, and Teamcenter, operating directly on native 3D geometry through the Parasolid kernel to deliver real-time manufacturability feedback and pricing insights.

It is a hands-on position requiring production C++ and Python development, definition of kernel and toolchain strategy, and leadership in computational geometry, AI integration, and large-scale CAD processing.

Responsibilities

Technical Vision & Roadmap

  • Own and drive a multi-year technical roadmap for the geometric reasoning stack: B-Rep ingestion and healing, feature recognition, DFM analysis, sub-process routing, geometric pricing signals, and downstream CAM/CAE integration.

Partnership Integration (DFM AI + IQE)

  • Serve as technical architect for embedded DFM AI + IQE integration.
  • Lead integration of geometric and AI capabilities into Solid Edge, NX, Designcenter, and Teamcenter via Parasolid.
  • Define integration architecture, geometry contracts, and real-time precision and latency budgets.

Geometric Kernel Architecture

  • Architect and implement robust intersection, offset, Boolean, projection, and trimming operations on NURBS curves and surfaces.
  • Build resilience layers for malformed CAD inputs.
  • Establish precision, robustness, and performance contracts including floating-point error budgets and numerical stability.

DFM & Sub-Process Intelligence

  • Combine computational geometry methods (B-Rep traversal, parametric surface analysis, medial axis, geodesic distance, curvature analysis) with ML approaches (graph neural networks, point-cloud/voxel encoders, neural implicit representations).
  • Detect manufacturability risks across 12+ CNC sub-processes and broader process catalog.

Research-to-Production Translation

  • Translate research in computational geometry and fabrication into production systems.
  • Publish, patent, or open-source methods where appropriate.

Technical Leadership & Standards

  • Lead design reviews and define technical standards.
  • Mentor Staff and Senior engineers.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Partner with Product, Manufacturing Engineering, Pricing, and Operations to translate business outcomes into geometric and algorithmic solutions.

External Representation

  • Represent the platform at conferences, standards bodies, academic collaborations, and customer engagements.

What You'll Bring

Experience & Education

  • M.S. or PhD in a relevant technical field.
  • 12+ years of progressive experience in computational geometry, CAD/CAE, or simulation (or PhD with 8+ years industry experience).

Geometric Modeling Mastery

  • Deep expertise in analytical geometry, NURBS, trimmed surfaces, B-Rep topology, geometry healing, robust predicates, and spatial data structures.

Kernel & CAD Interoperability

  • Experience with kernels such as Parasolid, ACIS, CGM, Granite, ShapeManager, Open CASCADE / pythonOCC.
  • Strong knowledge of STEP (AP203/AP214/AP242), IGES, JT, Parasolid XT, CATIA/NX/Creo/SolidWorks formats, DXF, HOOPS Exchange / PRC.

Technical Mastery

  • Expert C++ (C++14/17/20) with CMake, debugging, profiling, SWIG, pybind11.
  • Strong Python for tooling and ML integration.
