  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30am–4:00pm
  • Telework: Not available

Description

Provide high-quality, standardized non-invasive diagnostic vascular testing using advanced vascular ultrasonography techniques. Perform vascular ultrasound examinations (duplex, Doppler, plethysmography) to capture anatomical and pathological findings and provide a preliminary report for clinician review. Operate complex ultrasound equipment, ensure patient prep and identification, document findings, and notify clinicians of urgent abnormalities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duplex ultrasonography and Doppler analysis across cerebrovascular, arterial/venous (upper/lower extremities), and abdominal vascular studies, including dialysis access and physiologic exams.
  • Verify patient identity and ensure the requested procedure matches the patient’s clinical history and referral reason; conduct patient interview, physical assessment, and medical record review.
  • Identify and record anatomical and pathological images/tracings; differentiate normal vs abnormal findings and compensate for artifacts.
  • Use quantitative and qualitative methods to assess arterial, venous, and cerebrovascular blood flow using B-mode, duplex (with/without color flow), spectral Doppler, blood pressure monitoring, and photoplethysmography.
  • Operate and optimize ultrasound equipment settings (transducer frequency, Doppler angle, focal zones, gain, depth, color map, wall filter, sample volume) and troubleshoot equipment as needed.
  • Maintain equipment readiness and supplies; follow equipment operation and maintenance guidelines.
  • Provide patient education and preparation instructions (written and/or by phone) to minimize examination delays.
  • Document preliminary reports and unusual observations; provide verbal notification to clinicians of significant or urgent findings.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Subject to background/security investigation
  • Complete online onboarding and pre-employment requirements (including I-9 documentation)
  • Drug screening by urinalysis prior to appointment if selected
  • Selective Service Registration required for eligible males
  • Seasonal influenza vaccination program participation required
  • Complete a 1–2 year trial period; continued employment depends on certification that it advances the public interest
  • Certification/licensure requirements must be completed before hire (pending candidates may be referred but cannot be hired until requirements are met)
  • Preferred: BCLS and/or ACLS certifications and registration
  • Experience and competency at the GS-8/GS-9 level, including advanced vascular anatomy knowledge and ability to quantify Doppler/plethysmographic findings
  • Physical ability to lift/transfer patients and move ultrasound equipment (up to ~500 lbs), with sustained scanning demands
