Quick Facts

  • Role: Senior Software Engineer, Control Plane

  • Team focus: Unified Control Plane services across Starburst Enterprise Platform (SEP), Starburst Galaxy, and Trino

Description

You will design and build backend services and cloud infrastructure for a unified Control Plane that works across both multi-tenant SaaS and customer-operated on-premise/air-gapped deployments. The work includes provisioning and upgrading APIs, cluster lifecycle management, operational tooling, and unifying capabilities such as access control, multi-cluster management, routing, catalog management, and observability into a single implementation for both deployment models.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain shared control plane services used across Starburst Enterprise, Starburst Galaxy, and Trino

  • Deliver a unified control plane by implementing capabilities as one system for both SaaS and self-managed deployments

  • Own reliability, scalability, and efficiency (performance/$) for the services you build, including provisioning/upgrading APIs and cluster lifecycle management

  • Support two operating models at once: managed scale service operations and customer-operated deployments across AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premise

  • Provide thoughtful, timely peer pull request and design proposal reviews

  • Continuously improve engineering processes, tests, and systems so the codebase and team productivity scale together

  • Collaborate globally with clear written communication via Slack, GitHub PRs, and design documents

  • Provide exceptional customer support for internal and external customers

  • Periodically assist with the React and TypeScript-based Portal UI (frontend knowledge beneficial, not required)

Requirements

  • Prior experience developing distributed systems

  • Extensive software development experience with Java

  • Cloud infrastructure architecture and orchestration experience across at least one major cloud provider

  • Experience building and operating backend services that others depend on (APIs, control loops, lifecycle management)

  • Hands-on adoption of AI coding tools and agents in day-to-day engineering, with sound judgment about where they help and where they don’t

  • Demonstrated experience with software engineering and design best practices

  • Appreciation for maintainable, performant, high-quality software in a globally distributed team

  • Intrinsic motivation to improve software engineering craftsmanship

  • Comfort with significant autonomy and ownership

  • Ability to connect the dots when replacing two implementations with one

  • Demonstration of Ownership, Grit, and Bias for Action

Benefits

  • Work on globally scaled control plane infrastructure spanning SaaS and self-managed/air-gapped environments

  • High-impact role in the Data Analytics space with strong opportunities to learn from complex deployment problems
