Description

You will support stabilization and optimization of a large, production Azure SQL Database environment in the insurance sector, where database performance, system stability, and reliable API operation are critical. Your main task is to run a full health check, find bottlenecks, and implement improvements that increase performance and stability. The environment is ~4 TB on Azure SQL Database (PaaS), General Purpose tier with 24 vCores.

Responsibilities

• Perform SQL performance optimization: analyze and tune queries, execution plans, indexes, and statistics in a multi-terabyte database

• Diagnose production issues: address CPU, memory, blocking, deadlocks, long-running processes, and unstable API response times

• Analyze the Azure SQL environment: conduct health checks, assess General Purpose tier limitations, and recommend configuration and architectural changes

• Optimize database mechanisms: analyze temporal tables, TVP-based queries, and maintenance strategies for indexes and statistics

• Improve monitoring and availability: enhance monitoring/alerting, analyze read replica usage, and evaluate solutions for high availability and disaster recovery

• Collaborate with the technical team: support redesign of the data access layer for Rating APIs, document changes, provide recommendations, and transfer knowledge

Requirements

• Very strong knowledge of Azure SQL Database (PaaS) and practical experience maintaining and optimizing multi-terabyte production databases

• Knowledge of General Purpose constraints: IOPS, IO latency, log rate limits, memory per vCore, tempdb

• Advanced knowledge of MS SQL Server and T-SQL performance tuning: query optimization, execution plan analysis, indexes, statistics

• Experience with Query Store, plan regression, parameter sniffing mitigation, and forced plans

• Experience using wait statistics and DMV for diagnostics; ability to troubleshoot CPU, memory, blocking, and deadlocks

• Practical knowledge of Azure Monitor and Azure Log Analytics

• Knowledge of Azure SQL mechanisms: Active Geo-Replication, Auto-failover Groups, Readable Replicas

• Experience working with System-versioned Temporal Tables and Table-Valued Parameters (TVPs)
