Description

As a Mechanical Product Design Engineer for the Optimus program, you will integrate mechanical and electrical components, consolidate connectors, harnesses, and sensors, and help build electromechanical architecture for actuators, sensors, and distribution devices.

Responsibilities

  • Develop designs in CAD for detailed parts and master model assemblies

  • Perform tolerance analysis, FEA, and other simulations before releasing designs for production

  • Create 2D drawings appropriate for high-volume production and inspection methods

  • Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews with suppliers and support tooling bring-up

  • Design automated fixtures and calibration equipment for advanced robotics products

  • Design start-to-launch electromechanical parts and assemblies including plastics, sheet metal, heat sinks, and PCBA (including rigid-flex PCBA and FPC MCOs)

  • Complete mechanical integration analysis including thermal, design for assembly, design for test, and stack-up

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical, electrical, software, and firmware engineers to generate architectural tradeoffs and elegant designs

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field; graduation between May 2027 and December 2027

  • Minimum 12 weeks availability; must be able to work 40 hours/week on-site for most internships (CPT authorization requires school approval)

  • Proficiency in 3D modeling software for parts and assemblies (CATIA preferred)

  • Strong structural optimization intuition supported by FEA/hand calculations

  • Good electrical foundation including gearbox, motor, inverter, and wire harness design

  • Ability to prototype using fabrication, machining, and basic electronics/coding abilities

  • Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stacks, and DFM/DFA/DFT/DFR; DFMEA and PFMEA experience preferred

  • Basic understanding of electrical design fundamentals and familiarity with PCBAs and PCBA components

  • Strong knowledge of materials and fabrication methods for low- and high-volume

  • Analytical background for tolerance stack-ups, solid mechanics, thermal, and cost/mass optimization

  • Exposure to test systems, production machinery, and hobbyist electronics (e.g., sensors, PLCs, pneumatics, Raspberry Pi, microcontrollers)

  • FFC/FPC/rigid-flex technologies preferred

Expected Compensation

$20.00 - $55.00 per hour + benefits. Pay varies based on market location and individual job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
