Description
Provides technical support and expertise for molding process optimization, molding validation, and technical leadership in tool design to custom part suppliers and team members. Drives supplier activities from production start-up through scale-up to increased volumes while meeting Abbott Diabetes Care requirements.
What You’ll Work On
- Lead large scale, complex multiple projects.
- Coordinate and lead internal/external resources to achieve project goals.
- Design/specify, purchase, install, and qualify injection mold tools, molding machines, ancillary equipment, and related service requirements.
- Design/specify, purchase, install, and qualify reel-to-reel progressive stamping and forming tooling (strip layout design, feed systems, in-die sensing).
- Provide technical leadership in molding process characterization, SIM studies, and validation activities to custom part suppliers.
- Support qualification of new and existing molds, improve process optimization, and resolve supplier technical issues.
- Identify, characterize, and document key process variables included in Design Transfer.
- Optimize supplier manufacturing processes for cost effectiveness and quality improvement via capital projects, statistical analysis, design of experiments, and procedural changes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and act as SME/ITE for project technical matters.
- Ensure timely documentation in accordance with business standards.
- Comply with applicable EHS policies and rules, and with Corporate/divisional policies and GMP.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering/science or closely related discipline desired; or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence
- Strong understanding of injection molding process and tool design
- Stamping expertise and reel-to-reel progressive dies knowledge preferred
- Die design fundamentals: blank development, spring-back compensation, tolerance stack analysis
- Knowledge of stamping press selection and coil handling systems
- Experience qualifying stamping tooling through FAI, capability studies, and tool transfer methods
- Prior experience analyzing First Article Inspection (FAI) and PpK data
- Familiarity with cGMP, FDA, and ISO regulated environment
- Experience with tooling manufacturing sites; interaction with toolmakers and equipment suppliers for design, FOT, FAT qualification activities
- Equipment design and specification with validation experience
- Design of Experiments for plastic injection molding process development
- Strong technical knowledge and application of concepts/practices/procedures
- Ability to work on complex problems involving multiple competing factors
- Ability to work independently and in groups
- Ability to work cross-functionally
- Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
- Ability to use databases and other computer software
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Ability to quickly gain knowledge/understanding/skills and willingness to learn
- Understand and comply with applicable EHS policies and GMP/corporate & divisional policies
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical project management experience in injection molding industry, preferably medical molding
- Experience working with third-party molders for complex parts
- Injection molding process development SIM qualification to Master Molder level advantage
- Experience with RJG pressure transducers for process control advantage
- Ability to travel ~15%, including internationally
