Data Architect with Azure and Databricks

The Work

  • Design and implement scalable cloud-based data warehousing and analytics solutions using Azure Data Lake, Azure Databricks, Microsoft Fabric and related services, such as Power BI.
  • Define best practices for data governance, security, performance optimization and cost efficiency in Azure and Databricks environments.
  • Collaborate with data engineers, data scientists and cloud architects to deliver end-to-end data platform solutions.
  • Integrate Databricks with the broader Azure ecosystem, including data lakes, AI/ML frameworks, reporting systems and data catalogs, such as Unity Catalog and Purview.
  • Advise clients on modernization strategies, including migration from legacy on-premises databases to Azure and Databricks-based architectures.
  • Support pre-sales and solutioning activities, including estimation, proof of concepts and technology assessments.
  • Stay current with Azure, Databricks and Fabric innovations and apply industry trends to projects.
  • Collaborate throughout project development with business analysts, source-system experts, data architects, engineers and product owners.
  • Propose and defend effective, consistent solutions that balance strategic development with existing architecture.
  • Communicate and document work clearly, considering performance and cost in design decisions.

Work may combine remote work, client-site work and office-based work, depending on project circumstances. Some in-person time is required for collaboration, learning and relationship building.

Qualifications

Here’s what you’ll need

  • Strong hands-on experience designing and implementing data platforms in Azure and Databricks, including performance tuning, security setup, automation and data sharing.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing data platforms in Azure cloud. AWS and GCP knowledge is an additional advantage.
  • Expertise in SQL, PySpark, data modeling (3NF and star/snowflake schemas), and ELT/ETL design patterns, including popular ETL tools such as Azure Data Factory.
  • Proficiency in Python or similar scripting languages for data transformation, orchestration and automation.
  • Experience with advanced Databricks features, including Unity Catalog, MLflow, Jobs and Pipelines.
  • Deep understanding of cloud data architecture principles, including Lakehouse concepts, Medallion architecture, API integration and event-driven architecture.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Azure Databricks and Microsoft Fabric architecture, including core components, integration strategies and best practices for scalable, secure and efficient data solutions.
  • Experience with CI/CD and DevOps practices for data workflows, including Git, Terraform and Azure DevOps.
  • Excellent communication and client-facing skills, with the ability to translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.

Bonus Points If You Have

  • Familiarity with machine learning or GenAI integration, including operationalizing AI/ML models or using LLMs within Databricks and Azure.
  • Knowledge of modern data-stack tools, such as dbt, Power BI, Tableau and Looker.
  • Exposure to data mesh or data fabric architectures.
  • Understanding of cost optimization and FinOps principles for data solutions.
  • Knowledge of data governance, metadata management and compliance frameworks, such as GDPR, HIPAA and SOC2.
  • Experience leading data-modernization programs in large enterprise environments.
  • Databricks Associate or Professional series certifications.
  • Microsoft certifications in Microsoft Fabric and Azure.
