About Lumafield:
Lumafield was founded in 2019 to upgrade manufacturing. We are engineers with deep experience across the product development cycle, from initial ideas to shipping hardware, across industries and specializations, who became frustrated by the cost and complexity of modern manufacturing. Engineers make million-dollar decisions every day, and they need tools that give them the greatest possible insight into their products. By offering unprecedented visibility into products, as well as AI-driven tools that highlight problems and generate quantitative data, Lumafield promises to revolutionize the way complex products are created, manufactured, and used across industries.
We started with industrial CT scanning, enabling rapid non-destructive inspection of essential components. We rebuilt the whole system, from X-ray capture, to computer vision analysis, to web-based collaboration, making advanced manufacturing technology more accessible.

By offering unprecedented visibility into products, as well as AI-driven tools that highlight problems and generate quantitative data, Lumafield promises to revolutionize the way complex products are created, manufactured, and used across industries. We started with industrial CT scanning, which for us was the most valuable but underutilized tool in the manufacturing toolbox, enabling us to rapidly inspect essential components non-destructively. We rebuilt the whole system, from X-ray capture, to computer vision analysis, to web-based collaboration, to the entire business model, making the most advanced manufacturing tech more accessible to every industry. Our company, like our platform, is designed for upgrades. We’re building for greater intelligence, autonomy, and speed. For deeper vision, operational excellence, and powerful insights. And then we'll upgrade it all again. Lumafield is headquartered in Cambridge, MA, and has an office in San Francisco, CA. About the Role: The Hardware Group is looking for a Hardware Systems Engineer to join our San Francisco office and own the breadth of hardware development for a new class of industrial CT scanners. You’ll span electrical architecture and design, MCU firmware, and system integration, partnering tightly with other engineering and product teams to bring prototypes from concept through to shipping product. This is a hands-on, highly interdisciplinary role. You will be the hardware generalist closest to the product in San Francisco, collaborating with our team in Cambridge to carry system-level decisions all the way down to boards, firmware, and integrated prototypes. You’ll work alongside a small, fast-moving team that values curiosity, rigor, and system-level thinking. This is a full-time, in-person role based in our Cambridge, MA office. What you'll do: Drive the system architecture. Translate product-level requirements into a clear split across mechanical, electrical, and firmware, and make the buy-vs-build calls on the components that matter. Select and qualify the critical parts (motors, sensors, actuators, motion controllers, power supplies) and own the rationale and tradeoffs. Handle the light CAD yourself: MCAD for brackets, mounts, and fixtures; ECAD for embedded platforms and smaller PCBAs. Build the prototypes. Turn a wrench, pull cables, bring up boards, and bring a pile of parts up to a working integrated system. Write drivers for the peripherals you pull onto the product and land them in the appliance firmware and application stack with the Systems Software team. Own test and validation. Plan it, fixture it, run it, analyze the data, and push corrective actions back into the design. About you: Several years of hands-on experience taking a complex electro-mechanical or robotics product from blank page to working hardware. Breadth of knowledge in mechanical design, electronics, and embedded code. You don’t need to be the best in the room at any of the three, but you’ve done all three on real products. Comfortable enough in MCAD and ECAD to produce your own simple designs without handing them off to a specialist. A tinkerer at heart - you chase ambiguity into the hardware and keep digging until you understand why a system behaves the way it does. Bonus points for: Background in motion control, closed-loop systems, or sensor fusion. Shipped a hardware product from first prototype to production at volume. Experience with X-ray systems or other radiation-emitting equipment. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas at this time. Remote-first work with required overlap with US Central Time. 🗂️ Requirements: 6+ years of experience building and maintaining production software systems, Strong experience designing and owning complex backend systems, Strong backend engineering skills, Experience with asynchronous, event-driven, or workflow-based distributed systems, Ability to work with 4–5 hour daily overlap with US team, Experience with AI or LLM-based systems and process automation, Strong spoken and written English communication skills, Ability to solve unclear problems with incomplete information, Self-motivated with strong ownership and responsibility 📃 Skills: TypeScript, Node.js, AI, LLM, Claude, Backend, APIs, HIPAA 🏢 Description: Please Note: Overlap with Central US Time required (until 20-21:00 CEST) We are a health technology company that helps older people and their families apply for important eldercare benefits, including Medicaid, Medicare, and VA programs. We work with healthcare, government systems, and people’s daily lives, so accuracy, reliability, and trust are very important. As the number of patients grows from hundreds to thousands, manual work is no longer enough. We are building AI-powered systems to automate routine tasks while keeping people involved for quality checks, difficult cases, and patient safety. Our goal is to make healthcare operations more scalable without losing the human connection. The Role We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to lead the design and development of systems that combine AI automation with human workflows. This is an important role close to the core business. It is a fully hands-on position with no management duties or direct reports. You will not only build features, but also design systems, define best practices, and guide technical decisions as we grow. You should feel comfortable solving unclear problems, working closely with operations and product teams, and making smart decisions in a regulated environment. This role is a good fit for someone who enjoys system design, building reliable infrastructure, and taking ownership of their work. What You’ll Work On Designing workflow and orchestration systems for complex operations. Creating AI automations that handle routine tasks safely and send difficult cases to humans. Building systems where AI supports human work before, during, and after tasks. Managing long-running workflows that can last days or weeks.
