Director of Engineering - Data Platform

Senior • On-site

Austin, TX

Lead the engineering function behind an early-stage, perimeter-safe data lineage and migration impact-analysis platform for regulated enterprises.

Description

We are hiring a Director of Engineering to lead and grow the engineering organization behind a working product that is becoming a standalone business. This is a build-focused role where you will own delivery, quality, security readiness, engineering process, and execution of the technical roadmap, partnering closely with the Chief Architect.

What You'll Work On

  • Lead a distributed engineering team across platform/product engineering, connectors, QA, DevOps/infra, AI implementation, data governance, and support.
  • Own delivery, quality, release discipline, and execution of the technical roadmap.
  • Implement automated testing, QA, CI/CD, release governance, and versioning.
  • Drive repeatable, perimeter-safe deployments including containerization, infrastructure-as-code, secure deployment, and SOC 2 readiness.
  • Partner on the connector framework, canonical metadata model, architecture decisions, and product IP.
  • Assess current talent, retain strong contributors, hire to fill gaps, and align the team to the roadmap.
  • Promote practical AI usage across coding, review, testing, operations, and engineering productivity.

What You'll Bring

  • Experience leading and growing engineering teams, owning delivery, and shipping products.
  • Hands-on technical depth in data platforms, metadata, backend systems, or platform engineering.
  • Experience building or rebuilding engineering functions in startup or early-stage environments.
  • Experience implementing testing, QA, CI/CD, and release practices.
  • Experience leading distributed or offshore teams.
  • Security and compliance literacy for regulated environments, including SOC 2, audit logging, SSO, data security, and secure deployment.
  • Strong AI fluency with practical application across engineering workflows.

How You Work

  • Player-coach mindset with ability to go deep technically and ship pragmatically.
  • Comfortable operating with incomplete information and defining direction.
  • Ability to improve quality, process, and security without slowing momentum.

Bonus Points

  • Experience maturing early-stage products to enterprise-grade.
  • Background in regulated industries such as financial services, insurance, healthcare, or government.
  • Familiarity with perimeter or on-prem deployment, lineage, metadata, graph data, or migration impact-analysis.

What Success Looks Like

  • Clear team ownership and strong delivery rhythm with a credible roadmap-to-release model.
  • Testing, QA, CI/CD, release governance, and versioning in place without slowing product momentum.
  • Progress toward enterprise-grade readiness for regulated buyers.
  • Trusted partnership with the Chief Architect and credible leadership across engineering and executive stakeholders.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. (no visa sponsorship available).
  • Must reside in one of the following U.S. states: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, NH, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, TN, TX, VA, WI, or Washington DC.
