Description

Supervise the medical center’s Clinical Outcomes and Formulary Management (COFM) program within Pharmacy Service. You will oversee staff adjudicating prior authorization drug requests (PADRs) and provide clinical and program leadership to optimize pharmaceutical use for patients—especially biologics and high-cost specialty medications—with a focus on better outcomes at lower cost.

Responsibilities

  • Promote implementation of locally established guidelines and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for medication management.
  • Oversee training, onboarding, competency documentation, scopes of practice, and recommendations for clinical privileges.
  • Perform quality assurance reviews; identify medication errors/near misses/deficiencies and develop corrective action plans.
  • Provide clinical oversight, education, and consultation for drug therapy, PADR adjudication, formulary management, monitoring, and outcomes.
  • Manage staffing, schedules, workload shifts, coverage, time-and-attendance changes, and staff morale/burnout-reduction initiatives.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and long-range plans for PADR and formulary operations; ensure compliance with OPPE/FPPE, clinical-privileging, and regulatory/accreditation requirements.
  • Support audits, records management, Medication Use Evaluations, defensible data collection, and reporting of program metrics.
  • Review and adjudicate PADRs using clinical criteria and evidence; enter approved orders and complete appeals.
  • Assess lab results, diagnostics, and medication regimens for safety, effectiveness, dosing, interactions, and outcomes; communicate recommendations to prescribers.
  • Provide weekly comprehensive medication management for patients on biologics/high-cost specialty medications and support specialty clinic workflow and cost-effective algorithms.
  • Serve on Pharmacy & Therapeutics subcommittee as needed; submit quarterly cost-savings reports; evaluate and track national/VISN cost-saving initiatives.
  • Participate in VISN formulary management and PBM committees/meetings; support EHR updates for ordering and appropriate access to formulary agents.
  • Train staff (pharmacists, technicians, students, residents) and serve as a preceptor; maintain current knowledge and respond to drug information inquiries.
