Lead Backend Engineer

Description

You will lead the WASP team’s delivery by owning committed items, planning and grooming the roadmap, running sprint planning, and leading backlog analysis. You will partner with Product Managers and other R&D managers to align priorities and translate product goals into an executable plan, while staying hands-on on critical paths to set the technical bar for architecture, design, and code quality. You will work with AI coding agents (Claude) as part of everyday engineering.

Responsibilities

• Lead the team’s delivery: own committed items, plan and groom the roadmap, run sprint planning, and lead backlog analysis
• Work with Product Managers and other R&D managers to align priorities, manage dependencies, and translate product goals into an executable plan
• Drive architecture and design decisions with emphasis on data correctness, customer-facing API stability, multi-tenant isolation, and pipeline reliability
• Stay hands-on: write clean, concise, well-tested code on critical paths (primarily Python; Go for selected backend services)
• Use AI agents to accelerate development, investigation, code review, and lead safe agent-assisted workflows
• Diagnose complex issues, evaluate options, and recommend and execute best solutions
• Own the domain end-to-end, including DevOps: CI/CD, AWS cloud infrastructure, monitoring/alerting
• Lead the team’s on-call rotation and production incident response for the domain
• Run team ceremonies, manage delivery against the roadmap, and grow team members
• Manage team performance

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or relevant experience
• 7+ years of production software engineering experience
• Strong Python development experience, including Python web frameworks (DRF, FastAPI, Flask, etc.)
• Hands-on Go development experience for backend services
• Practical experience using AI coding agents in day-to-day engineering, plus a point of view on where they add the most value
• Experienced in building and supporting analytic systems
• Knowledge of designing and implementing event-driven systems
• Deep understanding of SQL database capabilities within web applications (PostgreSQL)
• Experienced with micro-service architecture and cloud-native services focused on AWS
• Solid understanding of software design principles, concurrency, synchronization, memory management, data structures, algorithms, etc.
• 1+ year as a Tech Lead or Team Lead with proven ability to plan and own delivery, make/defend technical decisions, and grow engineers
• Ability to prioritize and organize effectively and communicate well
• Solid analytical and troubleshooting abilities
• English level B2
