This role supports Frontex—the European Border and Coast Guard Agency—in developing, consulting on, and modernizing large-scale border management and security systems across Europe.

What You Will Do

  • Serve as the technical authority driving high-impact architecture for complex, enterprise-level ICT systems.
  • Own end-to-end system architecture, design interoperable interfaces, and maintain architecture throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Lead development teams; establish standards for design, quality, and testing; and mentor engineers.
  • Elicit requirements, map business goals to system capabilities, evaluate new technologies, and optimize performance, security, and scalability.
  • Bridge user needs with highly secure, compliant architectures tailored for EU institutions.

What We Expect

Experience & Certifications

  • 8+ years of total IT professional experience, including 5+ years in a Solutions Architect or equivalent role.
  • Proven track record as a Key Architect on at least 2 large-scale software systems.
  • At least 2 active certifications from the following:
    • Master-level software architecture credential, such as TOGAF Certified.
    • Certified UML Professional (Foundation level or equivalent).

Technical Expertise

  • Deep domain expertise in enterprise system design, capacity planning, and security on Microsoft platforms.
  • Hands-on mastery of systems modeling tools, such as Sparx Enterprise Architect and ARIS Architect; UML; and methodologies including RUP, Agile, and ISO 12207.
  • Broad proficiency across databases, app servers, middleware, web servers, GIS services, directory services, and Business Intelligence (BI).

Domain & Platform Mandates

  • Direct architectural experience with the Schengen Information System (SIS).
  • Proven architectural experience with RedHat OpenShift as the primary platform.
  • Hands-on delivery of biometric/document scanning solutions featuring at least one of the following:
    • Fingerprint scanning in NIST format, minimum 2 fingers.
    • Document scanning using MRZ for passports, IDs, or visas.
    • Biometric RFID chip data extraction.
  • Solid grasp of EU Data Privacy, DPIA, and Information Security Risk Assessment frameworks.
