Responsibilities
- Be involved in analytical activities to understand the scope of a control and how Platform services could fulfil it for tenants. This is a large part of the role and will help the team understand how controls can be engineered and automated.
- Be part of the engineering team building the automation services, workflows and integrations needed to automate controls at scale.
- Apply strong software engineering skills, particularly in developing APIs, data schemas and process flows.
- Conceptualise, design and develop solutions to automate controls.
- Demonstrate operational, delivery and engineering excellence when developing the Platform Control Plane.
- Actively drive continuous improvement, mature the organisation and improve productivity through automation, process improvement and reuse.
- Collaborate across functional areas to define, prioritise and implement innovations that improve controls for tenants of Engineering Platforms.
Skills & Experience Required
- 10+ years of experience.
- Understanding of technology platforms, including Internal Developer Platforms and internal and cloud hosting platforms.
- Experience in several languages; polyglot engineering capability.
- Database and schema knowledge, API development, and a basic understanding of Linux and web technologies.
- Experience deploying within HSBC is helpful but not essential.
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in Computer Science or a related discipline.
- 8+ years of software engineering experience.
- Experience in a technical lead role focused on DevOps, Platform Engineering or SRE is beneficial but not essential.
- Solid understanding of how the internet and HTTP work under the hood, including DNS, TLS, load balancing, reverse proxies, service meshes and API gateways, and how they come together in modern microservice architectures.
- Strong structured and object-oriented programming ability in one or more of Java, JavaScript or Python.
- Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Grafana and InfluxDB, plus familiarity with time-series databases and data-visualisation concepts.
- Iterative technology delivery, delivering in small iterations to provide value faster.
- Self-motivated, enthusiastic and proven fast learner.
- Ability to drive technical alignment across global teams in diverse locations and time zones, including mentoring and enabling developing offshore engineering teams.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, teamwork, leadership and senior stakeholder-management experience.
- Proficiency in English and ability to communicate at a business level with everyone.
- Reporting and presentation skills, including analysing and presenting recruitment data clearly.
- Innovative thinking, with the ability to challenge conventional approaches and create new ways of working in a dynamically changing environment.
