Engineering Manager - Agentic AI

Senior • On-site

200,000 - 270,000 USD/yr

San Francisco, CA

Quick Facts

Engineering Manager for a new Agentic AI initiatives team. Player-coach role: starts hands-on as lead architect/foundational engineer to build a secure, scalable agentic AI platform; transitions into full engineering management as the team scales. Base salary estimate: $200,000–$270,000 plus cash bonus and equity.

Description

This role is a “player-coach” opportunity. During the initial phase, you will act as the lead architect and foundational engineer to establish the core ecosystem that enables autonomous, intelligent agents to execute multi-step medical reasoning securely and at scale; later, you will shift into a full Engineering Manager capacity to scale the team and drive long-term technical strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Initial Hands-On Execution: Design, architect, and write code for a robust, secure, and scalable Agentic AI platform. Establish standard patterns for multi-agent orchestration, state management, tool usage, and memory.

  • Team Building & Leadership: Transition from an individual contributor/architect role into a dedicated management role as the team scales.

  • Technical Strategy: Drive technical execution of brand-new, agent-driven product features from ideation to production deployment. Build systems to parse requirements, map software modules, and auto-generate test cases.

  • Safety & Compliance: Implement advanced guardrails, evaluation frameworks, and reasoning validation loops to ensure agent behaviors are safe, deterministic, highly accurate, and meet the compliance rigor required for FDA-cleared software.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with product managers, clinical experts, and data scientists to translate clinical needs into technical AI agent architectures and product roadmaps.

  • Best Practices: Champion software engineering best practices (CI/CD, comprehensive testing, logging for non-deterministic systems) and keep the team ahead of the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with a proven track record of shipping production-grade software.
  • 5+ years of experience managing, mentoring, or acting as a formal technical lead for software engineering teams.
  • Player-coach mentality: deeply hands-on with code and architecture during the first 6–12 months while building the team.
  • Deep hands-on experience building applications with Large Language Models (LLMs), plus strong understanding of agentic architectures, orchestration frameworks, and vector databases.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python or Go, with solid grasp of microservices, API design, and cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP).
  • Passion for greenfield projects: comfortable with ambiguity and designing systems from scratch.

Benefits

  • Base salary compensation range estimate: $200,000 to $270,000, with cash bonus and equity.
  • Equal Opportunity Employer commitment to an inclusive work environment.
