Description

Travelers seeks a Software Engineer I to complete intermediate, end-to-end engineering tasks for system assignments including developing, analyzing, configuring, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementing based on user or system design specifications. The engineer will contribute to the BSI Cyber Scan platform—a multi-codebase system spanning Elixir services, Python components, JavaScript/React front-end, PostgreSQL databases, and AWS Lambda/Step Functions. The platform supports cyber underwriting capability and feeds multiple stakeholder groups.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analysis, design, development, and configuration; define technical requirements for intermediate complexity assignments.
  • Participate in analysis, assessment, and resolution for defects and incidents of intermediate complexity; escalate appropriately.
  • Independently tackle well-scoped problems within team guidelines.
  • Seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
  • 2 additional years of software engineering experience.
  • Authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S.; no H-1B, TN, or Forms I-983/STEM OPT sponsorship/support for this role.
  • Experience with Elixir or another functional/actor-model language strongly preferred; willingness to learn Elixir required.
  • Comfort working across multiple languages and codebases (Elixir, Python, JavaScript/React) in a single product ecosystem.
  • Familiarity with AWS cloud services—Lambda, S3, RDS, or equivalent.
  • Exposure to gRPC or Protocol Buffers helpful (not required).
